2.9: I Hate My Second Life
Third Person POV
It was late and the night seemed to creep over a figure who was seated on her windowsill.
“I see. You saw no one?” she said.
A wispy voice responded quietly. Its whisper barely broke the silence in the room.
The curtains were swaying slowly from the wind and seemed to cocoon the young lady in an ululating fashion. Moonlight poured over her, revealing her face in plain sight. Her beauty was so unrealistic, it would have been hard to believe that God himself had breathed life into her. Her soft hair, which glinted brilliantly even in the darkest of nights, fell over her neckline and the bodice of her hourglass figure. Her eyes were like jewels made from bright red blood and had the effect of causing almost anyone who met her gaze to fall into a stupor. She carried herself as a noblewoman and her overall appearance made her overwhelming beauty seem almost frightening.
“If you find the party looking for him, attach yourself to the most influential and strongest passionate subject,” Roxana gave a new order to her servant. The red butterfly resting atop her finger affirmed in its wispy voice again and declared its allegiance. Soon the butterfly flew into the air, repeating her mistress’s orders like a spell, and disappeared from view.
Roxana thought of the young man in the dungeons and gave a low sigh. A teardrop slid over her beautiful face.
She had to think quickly. While she had been with Cassis the last fortnight, Charlotte, one of her half-siblings, had been wheedling the guardsman to see him, “the toy.” Her tantrum had been heard throughout half of the manor.
Roxana knew the guardsman was weak. She appeared at the entrance to the dungeons to distract Charlotte from coming in. Her attitude had been flippant as she told her younger sister that she had also been curious about the toy. And Yo-an, the guardsman; it was always pleasant to see him. Her cold, playful smile unnerved the man and child.
Roxana didn’t know how she could hold a monopoly over Cassis for much longer.
“Will we make it?” she murmured, thinking of their fates.
Her eyes lowered. Cassis had voluntarily eaten the last pill without any violent action from her part. Did he know her identity? Or did he trust her a little more? Of course, if he knew her surname, he would see her immediately as a villain. He must have believed she was only a maid who felt sorry for him. She may have been psychologically corrupted by her Agriche masters, but still had enough of a heart to go against the order of Lant Agriche.
Or maybe Cassis had just resigned himself to whatever fate she had in store for him. If he refused, he might have assumed that she would render him unconscious and force him to eat.
She tapped her finger against the window. The first family dinner since Cassis Pedelian’s arrival was scheduled to commence soon.
She had received the second invitation to attend the dinner. Her father’s favourite son had received the first invitation. Father will be hosting, she thought.
A miracle would be welcome at this time.
