“*cough* *cough*
〔Let’s see… Coughing, a runny nose, and a fever of about 38 degrees. Boy, you sick.〕
‘I don’t require such an analysis, it’s my body. I can tell what I’m feeling.’

Early morning, a day after they had a strange first meeting with Mikhail. Currently, Cole was confined in his bed, coughing. His face was flushed and he looked weak. His forehead was sweating and he was a far cry from his usual look.
By now, he would’ve already gone down to eat or take a shower. Unfortunately, he felt weak all over. It was his first time feeling like this.
Just as he was pondering over if he should just force himself to get up since he’s experienced work in the past. But at the same time, the feeling of being sick was so foreign that he wasn’t sure if he should really do that.
As Cole was going back and forth with his options, a knock resounded out from behind his bedroom door.
“Cole? Are you alright? You haven’t gone down to eat your breakfast yet.”
“Papa! There’s chicken soup for breakfast! And hot milk!”
“Leave it– *cough*…outside the door…”
Cole knew that since he really was sick, it was best that Felicia and Eva keep their distance from him. He didn’t want to infect them. He also didn’t want to worry them so he tried to keep his cough as low as possible but…
“oHO?! Was that a cough I heard?!”
Not only did Felicia completely disregard Cole’s request, but she also slammed the door wide open. Her eyes were beaming while Eva tried to balance the tray of soup she had with her. After she finally stabilized the tray, she secretly sent a nasty glance Felicia’s way but just sighed in acceptance.
“Oh my gosh! It’s true! Wait, I’ll check if it really is just in case.”
‘It’s best I make sure. I’ll have to get medicine too if he really is sick.’
“Eh? There’s no need–”
Cole was going to tell Felicia that there was no need but before he knew it, she had already walked right to his bedside.
Since Cole was lying down, Felicia put her face directly above his. She parted her bangs with one hand and checked Cole’s throat with her other. She then placed her forehead on Cole’s to check as well.
“Ah, yeah. You’re definitely burning up.”
After confirming that, Felicia headed to the bathroom connected to the bathroom. She made sure to keep a medicine box in each bathroom and kitchen if needed. This left the stunned Cole alone with Eva.
Eva stared at her father. His face wasn’t cold but rather frozen. It seems that he didn’t expect for Felicia to suddenly do that.
She scribbled on a notebook she had with her and the title on the header was ‘Notes for Braith’.
“Let’s see, close contact, flushed faces… Okay, I guess this is the kind of stuff that Braith is looking for.”
〔You should tell Eva to add ‘increased heart rate’ to that list.〕
“Eva, it’s best if you add increased heart rate to that list.”
“Hm? Okay…”
Cole came back to his senses. He should’ve foreseen Felicia doing something like that knowing what kind of person she was. A few moments later, Felicia came back with some medicine and a fresh glass of water coming straight from her Inventory.
She had Cole take it and then let Eva leave the room since she was still young and it would be pretty bad if she got Cole’s cold. Although a bit hesitant at first, she did what she was told to and left while shouting out for Cole to get better.
It put a small smile on his face.
“Felicia, hand me my laptop.”
Cole opened it and was about to start typing something but he quickly rested his hands back down. This process repeated itself until he Felicia finally said something in reaction to his antics.
“You seem to be in shock.”
“Yes.”
Felicia didn’t actually expect Cole to answer. She had just said what any sentence that she thought fit the situation. But since Cole did answer, she was actually curious as to what Cole was curious about.
“Hm? Why?”
“This is my first time having a cold…”
Cole leaned his head to the window beside him. Outside he could see the monochrome foliage decorating the front of his house. As he started to stare at the plain landscape, his mind started to wander.
‘Was it because of Kupakululu? Looks like I’ll be testing my body’s immune system after all… So how did it get to me? All I know is that it probably has a week for an incubation period. This is dangerous. I might have spread it to the〈Times Zone〉! ‘
‘What should I do? We even went to China because Felicia wanted to see what her home country was like… This is dangerous.’
Cole was busy going off in his own little world when he noticed Felicia’s eyes. They were the ones that seemed to truly be in shock. Her finger was shakily pointing at him while her free hand was covering her slackened jaw.
“…What?”
“Cole, could it be…”
She acted as if the thing that was revealed to her was as heavy as finding out that the world was going to end tomorrow.
“Could it be that what?”
“Could it be that you were an idiot prior to this moment?”
“Are you talking about the Japanese superstition? Aren’t you Chinese? *cough*”
“是的,我是中国人!”
It seems that she didn’t like the fact that Cole doubted her lineage. Well, he already knew that she could speak on a conversational level from their trip yesterday and during the time when they were in the〈Huaxia Zone〉.To be honest, he didn’t know what exactly she was trying to prove here.
“Okay, nice to know that you’re probably fairly skilled in it with your accent.”
Cole waved Felicia off before he decided that he would go back to sleep. But right as he put his head on his pillow, he could feel an intense stare directed towards him.
“Hmm…”
He tried to just ignore it but the grew intenser the longer he let his eyes stay closed. Hopefully thinking that it would be over in a few minutes if he told her to stop, Cole opened his eyes and asked what exactly Felicia was doing.
“What are you thinking about?”
“It’s just that I’m not sure to be happy or worried.”
“Hm? About what?”
Contrary to Cole’s expectations, it seemed she had something that she was genuinely worrying over.
“Cuz’ you see, Person A of a pair catching a cold is an instant way for person B to gain affection with person A.”
“Yes, that is often the case.”
“But the fact that you got a cold is a bit worrying. Whenever my little sister got sick, she would always look like she was in so much pain…”
For once, Felicia’s bright and happy face dimmed. You couldn’t tell if she was sad over the fact that her little sister got sis or the memory of her little sis being sick. Cole grew curious, she never talked much about her family situation so he obviously wanted to know more.
“…Felicia…”
“Hm?”
She wiped the gloomy look of her face and immediately regained her jolly countenance. Seeing how fast she changed from sad to happy, Cole reaffirmed his decision.
“What was your family situation like?”
Felicia didn’t seem overly opposed to the idea.
“Why are you asking this?”
“Just curious. And you already know a bit of my family situation so is it bad that I want to know about yours?”
When Cole put it like that, there wasn’t really anything Felicia could say to refuse. It’s not like he planned to use it for future emotional blackmail.
‘Wait, that’s something he could totally do! Well, it’s not like he has a grudge towards me so it should be fine…?’
“Well, no, but… It’s pretty normal. It’s nothing like your family background and its complex relationships.”
“I don’t think that’s really important though.”
She actually seemed a bit embarrassed by the fact that there wasn’t anything special.
“I think the fact that you’d be willing to share about your family is a good thing in of itself. Don’t you? Besides, I’ve always like hearing about a ‘normal’ person’s life.”
With those words, Felicia had nothing to use to refuse him. He just sounded like he was asking out of pure concern out of her.
“Well, okay then.”
“We were pretty poor. We were in the area of where the〈Avant Zone〉had popped up so because of that, a lot of our stuff disappeared or got destroyed in the process.”
‘Now that I think about it, Felicia is 20. She was born in the same year the〈Collapse〉happened. It must have been tough…’
The〈Collapse〉wasn’t called the ‘Collapse’ without good reason. It was because people back then really did think that their world, economy, and livelihoods would be destroyed.
The sudden enlargement of the entire planet, the unexpected disappearance of a billion people from an important nation, the loss of connection from satellites. They were scary times for the people back then.
It was actually somewhat of a miracle that it only took 20 years for all Zones to get back on their feet in full working condition while maintaining some kind of balance with each other.
“Both my parents intuitively knew that it would be bad to get discovered by researchers in the〈Avant Zone〉so they hid the fact that we were Mechanicas.”
“Hmm… While nearly everyone is registered in the system, there are a few people that escape it when they were born and with the Collapse, everything must have been in chaos…”
Both of them were enjoying their conversation when Cole noticed a pair of people through his bedroom window. And not a second later, the intercom and doorbell rang.
“Moshi moshi?”
