“Let’s go back to where the original Murong Jieli lived, in her room in the manor. Let’s be sneaky as well.” Xiao Fu shook his head as he leaped on her shoulder, ”’no need, ”’ he said in her head. ”’Did you forget the plot?”’
Murong Jieli paused in confusion. ‘What about the plot? I thought I was on track with the events.’
”’If you hadn’t been kicked out for sneaking out, you would’ve been on track, ”’ Xiao Fu bluntly stated. Murong Jieli sighed as she asked her pet to elaborate.
”’Tonight, Murong Jieli was supposed to originally go with the family to a banquet for the first time, with the exception of last time since she got kicked out because she snuck in. This was courtesy of Murong Feili who wanted to embarrass the girl since the original Murong Jieli didn’t know any of the four virtuous arts, and the palace was holding a competition to impress the visiting, powerful emperor, ”’ Xiao Fu coughed, ”’who coincidentally happens to be Ru Weimin.”’
Xiao Fu continued, ”’Murong Jieli was almost embarrassed like planned because she stood with her head bowed down and face flushed as everyone laughed at her incompetence, ”’ Xiao Fu rolled his eyes as he said the next sentence, ”’except Ru Weimin saved her by standing up and lending her a hand. Immediately, everyone stopped laughing and acknowledged the girl.”’
‘Well shit…’
Xiao Fu’s eyes sparkle as he nodded fervently, ”’I know right? How clich and boring.”’
Murong Jieli shook her head, ‘no, I’m saying ‘well shit’ because he would’ve fallen in love with her even more by that point. I completely screwed the plot!’
”’Oh, that’s important, too, ”’ Xiao Fu muttered. ”’Not important to me, though!”’ He suddenly blurted out happily and disappeared, ”’good luck!”’
Murong Jieli facepalmed and slowly walked in the direction of the palace.
Her plan was going inside as a late guest. Despite not being on time was disrespectful to the emperor, she would find a way to convince them. She wasn’t sure how to yet, but Murong Jieli would worry about it when she got to that point.
Her priority right now was going back inside the city and looking decent. There was no way they’d allow her to go inside the palace unless she looked formal and not like she rolled in dirt.
Murong Jieli truly knew she was stuck in an awkward position as she didn’t have any money to buy anything, either.
‘Xiao Fu, Murong Jieli called out, can you lend me some money?’ Her cheeks flushed with embarrassment as her assistant snickered.
Xiao Fu sighed dramatically, ”’if I must be your savior and stylist… then so be it.”’
Murong Jieli waited for the money, in this case was banknotes, to appear but they never did. Instead, her body whooshed into the air and rapidly started spinning.
Anyone that saw the sight, which luckily was no one since she hadn’t entered through the gates yet, would’ve immediately screamed and assumed demonic arts. In reality, it was Xiao Fu teasing his mistress with his unique makeup techniques and being stingy, not wanting to share money.
A few minutes later, Xiao Fu saw that his mistress seemed on the urge to throw up as her stomach felt queasy, so he gently placed her on the grass. Murong Jieli stumbled to get up, but when she did, Xiao Fu slapped both his paws together to create a mirror before her.
Once seeing his mistress’ awestruck expression, he smirked but pretended to be experiencing fatigue as he wiped an invisible drop of sweat. ”’That was one of my hardest makeovers.”’
Murong Jieli glared at his insult but smiled nonetheless. Her helper had truly outdone himself with this makeover of hers.
Her long hair was rolled into two spirals decorated with pink flowers that were the same shade as her long and silky hanfu.
Flower patterns adorned and enhanced the elegance of the hanfu’s style and made Murong Jieli’s, a fashion enthusiast, eyes sparkle. It was gorgeous and most likely better than any hanfu from this era. It made her feel like a princess. Her lips and cheeks were rosy and bloomed with innocence. Her aura was noble yet adorable.
Murong Jieli squealed as she snapped her fingers to make her assistant appear. Xiao Fu grumpily stared at her for summoning him and wondered what she wanted. She picked up the kitten and squeezed the living daylights out of him with her hug, “Thank you.” She whispered. “You’re the luckiest friend I’ve ever had.”
Xiao Fu humphed arrogantly but a glint of happiness and acknowledgement was evident in his eyes.
Murong Jieli’s next words shattered their loving atmosphere, “I still need money for transportation.” Xiao Fu groaned and mumbled incoherent words that sounded like ”’my precious money.”’

After renting a carriage, Murong Jieli’s carriage’s horse trotted its way to the palace. Murong Jieli, inside, felt nervous at meeting royalty. Even in the Immortal Realm, her parents did have status, but not enough to be in the Jade Emperor and Ruby Empress’ court.
Very rarely did she meet the Jade Emperor unless necessary. The Jade Emperor and Ruby Empress, when they weren’t covering their faces, were rumored to be the most beautiful couple in the realm. All three realms, to be exact. The Ruby Empress’ beauty was so much that she still had many secret suitors vying for her hand, despite giving birth to many children. To prevent people from seeing his wife and seeing her husband, the couple wore masks when indulging with society.
”’Why are you thinking of the Jade Emperor and Ruby Empress?”’ Xiao Fu asked with annoyance, ”’please focus on your dumb mission.”’
Murong Jieli sighed. Her mind subconsciously wondered to their eldest son who always held a cold look when her younger self visited the Gem Palace.
He was their heir and was one of the most powerful immortals in all three realms. He was also very diligent when it came to studies and other miscellaneous hobbies like martial arts.
Despite all his accomplishments, he kept to himself and was like a giant ice cube. The only emotion she ever saw from him was the occasional glare when she was younger.
Since she hadn’t been to the Gem Palace for a few centuries, she hadn’t seen him either. Murong Jieli knew that he did grow up and was most likely very handsome. He was a pretty cute kid. Not that she liked him or anything. It was an observation.
”’Once again, why do we care?”’
Murong Jieli furrowed her brows, ‘we?’
Xiao Fu widened his eyes and mumbled something along the lines of ”’fourth wall”’ and mischievously smirked, ”’obviously your conscience and I, who are both unfortunately stuck with you.”’
Murong Jieli tsked and rolled her eyes.
As the horse and driver continued to travel, Murong Jieli closed her eyes for a small nap but suddenly was startled awake when the carriage halted abruptly and sharply. Before she could peek outside to see what was going on, her ears picked up the sound of swords clashing and slashes. Her nose recognized a metallic odor that made Murong Jieli shiver.
‘Xiao Fu, what do I do?’ She asked anxiously.
Xiao day pettily replied, ”’ask all the money you took from me to pay for this carriage. This, my dear, is called karma for robbing me broke.”’
‘Xiao Fu!’ Murong Jieli thought angrily, ‘this is not the time to joke around!’
”’Who said I am joking?”’ He muttered bitterly, ”’anyways, the academy taught you martial arts. So I’ll summon a sword for you.”’
Xiao Fu clapped his paws together and a beautiful sword appeared in the carriage. The sword looked mythical as it sparkled the word emperor and once opening it, the word emperor was once again etched to the silver metal but with a rainbow reflection. It was stunning but caused Murong Jieli to have a bad feeling in her gut.
“Where did you get this sword?” She asked cautiously as her hand wrapped around the sword. It automatically minimized to fit her hand perfectly. A magical sword in a non-fantasy type of world? Only Xiao Fu could do such things.
Xiao Fu rolled his eyes at her last sentence, ”’I found it.”’
‘But you were with me the entire time?’
Xiao Fu sighed in exasperation, ”’I can be in multiple places. Besides, being with you gets kinda boring most of the time. Wait, ”’ Xiao Fu paused and corrected, ”’all the time.”’
Murong Jieli didn’t feel hurt as she had gotten used to his snarky comments and blunt behavior. ‘But where did you find it?’
”’In a forest between the two empires. This empire and lover-boy’s empire.”’ Xiao Fu explained as his cat eyes sparkled with interest at the beautiful sword. ”’It was buried deep and protected.”’
Murong Jieli snorted, ‘maybe for a reason?’
Before Xiao Fu could reply, a sword pierced the wooden carriage, barely missing Murong Jieli.
She hopped out of the carriage and quickly assumed a fighting stance. With her sword in her hand, she quickly began to fight the men in black cloaks and back clothes. There seemed to be approximately a dozen and they all wore their disguises well.
Why would anybody want to assassinate her? For goodness sake, she wasn’t even involved as the male lead’s empress…
”’Yet, ”’ Xiao Fu added, to which Murong Jieli ignored. Murong Jieli cursed the beautiful hanfu she was wearing because it happened to get in her way as she defended her life.
Before a sword could slash her from the back, an arrow pierced the assassin’s heart…
