Ivan was having a hard time believing the system and the mission he gave him.
‘Is this system some kind of a pervert? Why does it even generate such missions?’ Ivan thought in his mind.
Ivan thought it was best to ignore the system for now.
Fenrir was running wildly without carrying if his riders were having problems or not. Naina was scared; her eyes closed shut. She unconsciously had her back leaned on Ivan’s chest to feel a little safer.
Ivan was not scared. In fact, he was having a thrill riding on the back of the Grey wolf. At that time, Ivan had forgotten about where he was or what he was going to do next to survive in this unknown world.
…
Freeman is a person able to go where they wish without the permission of a ruler and own the property they live on.
They are not nobles, aristocrats, or peasants and are not the majority of society.
These people may fall from grace and become a farmer or climb the ranks to knight or baron with luck.
More likely, they are working for a local lord as a scribe, steward, or barrister. They might be ten percent of the total population.
People that live in Towns and City’s are usually freemen. Peasants instead stay near the castle of the Knight or the Noble’s, or they live in small villages inside their master’s fiefdom.
But there are some exceptions. Due to war between two nations or even nobles of the same country, some peasants or freemen are always displaced as refugees. Once they become refugees, their only choice is to quickly find a lord willing to take them under their wing as peasants or freemen because of their skillsets and the necessary amount of money to live freely.
The rest have to find shelter in the outer edge of a forest where they group together to form their own village. Technically, at that time, they are not peasants, not freemen, not any citizen living inside the border of a nation. They are just humans and simple villagers who are trying to live by and survive this harsh world by their own hard work.
Since they are not related to any of the classifications above, these people do not get the protection of a local lord, from the magic beast tide or bandit raids or natural disasters. They have to fend for themselves.
The only possible way to change all that is to ask a local lord to take their village as part of their territory; get some protection in exchange for a yearly tribute like ordinary beast hides, lumber, magic herbs, and the likes.
If a local lord founds the village to be self-sufficient, then he or she would have no problem excepting them. From then on, those refugees again turns to freemen and part of the nation or the territory they come under protection.
Wild Wolf village was one such village that was made years ago by a group of refugees. They live by themselves and survive on hunting and gathering food inside the adjacent forest infested with wild wolves and some other carnivorous and herbivorous animals.
The magic beasts usually don’t stay near the settlements of humans. They stay deeper inside the forest, where there are abundant food and concentration of magic for their growth.
Ivan finally made it to the Wild Wolf Forest that he got to know from Jon.
The village was surrounded by wooden spike walls that were twice the height of a man.
There must be a platform behind those walls becuase Alex saw tow men with only their shoulders and head visible, walking along beside the walls while holding torches in their hands.
When Fenrir came a little closer to the walls, one of the men spotted it with Ivan and Naina riding atop it.
“Jerry, is that real, or am I just seeing things?” the men asked his comrade who looked into the direction he was pointing at.
Jerry was also surprised, but unlike his stupid and lazy friend, he quickly drew his bow at Ivan and shouted loudly to alert other guards on the duty of night watch as he warned the intruders.
“Hey, you, stop right there! Don’t come any closer, or we’ll shoot.” Jerry shouted while knowing an arrow. His stupid friend also copied him after it clicked him that two humans were riding a vicious grey wolf.
Ivan patted Fenrirs back, who seemed to trigger after he saw the insolent hooman’s pointing those sticks at him.
“Grrr!”
“Fenrir, calm down, its alright. They won’t hurt us. Here, eat this bread.” Ivan summoned bread from thin air and hung it near the wolf’s head so that he can eat it.
Jerry’s eyes rounded upon seeing that. It was the same for his friend who shouted involuntarily, “Ma… Magic! He is a mage!”
“Fen, what is it? I heard you shouting.” Ivan heard a gruff sounding voice originating from behind the wooden walls.
He soon saw a man with a big mustache and bald head who appeared on to the platform after climbing it.
Jerry whispered something in that bald man’s ears.
“Who are you guys? Why have you come to our remote village so late at night?” The bald man seems to be the superior of the two guards. His voice was filled with authority.
Ivan used Appraisal ability on him.
