The Wolf Of Aragnar - Chapter 16
Ivan was surprised upon seeing their basic information. He was also an apprentice warrior, but unlike Grant or Jerry, he did not have any battle skills. Maybe the person who occupied this body before did not train in any battle skills at all.
Naina opened her mouth to reply to Grant’s question after seeing that Ivan was not moving.
“Mister, My name is Naina, and this is Ivan Jaeger. The bandits attacked my caravan and captured me. If not for…” Naina narrated about their whole journey. From her being attacked by the bandits to being rescued by Ivan. And they were then riding to the Wild Wolf village on top of the Grey Wolf.
Of course, she did not go into detail about the embarrassing incidents that she had faced with Ivan.
Remembering about all that has happened to her today, her cheeks turned red.
She hoped Ivan didn’t hear the pounding heartbeat echoing in her ears and hoped he didn’t notice her warm, flushed face. Fortunately, she was sitting ahead of Ivan while Grant and his men were far away, so no one saw the change in her face.
“You actually tamed this Grey Wolf!” Grant exclaimed wide-eyed. His words were naturally directed to Ivan.
Grey wolves are known to be vicious, cunning, and proud canines. Most of the time, they hunt their prey in packs. It was rare for any Grey Wolf to go out for a hunt alone. Ivan and Naina were lucky not to meet them in a group, or their fate would have been instantly sealed.
“Maybe, this grey wolf was touched when I fed him with bread. So it decided to follow me.” Ivan didn’t know what else to say. He can’t reveal his system to anyone. He had that much of common sense.
Naina: “…”
Fen eyes were shining. He seemed to have some ideas after listening to what Ivan had said just now.
But soon, his fresh idea was squashed when he heard Grant say, “Grey wolves are not some dogs that can become your friend after you care for them or feed them food. But I also can’t rule out the possibility of the wolves showing similar behavior like dogs. They are similar in many ways. All I can say is that you just got lucky to meet this particular lone Grey Wolf that was different than the rest of his species. It was a rare one in a million case.” Grant said as he rubbed his shining bald head, reflecting the orange light that originated from the lit torches.
“Sir, we are exhausted. Can you let us stay in your village for one night? We will leave the village before the sun even rises in the morning.” Ivan requested genuinely.
Grant hesitated visibly. They usually don’t like outsiders coming to their village. Who knows, Ivan might be a spy of the Bandits, and all they said could just be some hoax. But then again, the Blacktooth bandits are the only top force in the surroundings, and they are strong enough not to choose such underhanded methods. They already pay them quite a sum of money and goods so that they don’t come to ransack their weak village.
“Alright, come inside, but your wolf has to stay outdoor. I can’t take the risk of him going wild inside the village, hurting the villagers.” Grant put up a condition after giving his permission for them to enter their village.
“Fenrir, can you stay outside till morning. You can’t go inside.” Ivan tried to communicate with the wolf and make the wolf understand what he meant to say. It was quite funny for Naina and also for Grant to see him doing weird actions.
Fenrir nodded his head like how humans do to express that they understood.
Ivan jumped off and helped Naina to come down from Fenrir’s back. After giving the wolf another loaf of bread to eat, Ivan walked towards the gate of the village with Naina by his side.
Grant saw it first hand how Ivan summoned a bread fro thin air and gave it to the grey wolf. His first reaction was, of course, to be surprised, but he also cursed Ivan for wasting a good piece of eatable bread. They were having a shortage of food in their village; some children would have to go to sleep starving, that’s why it hurt Grant to see the wolf eating the bread ravenously when he could find his food in the forest quite easily.
The wooden gates of the village were big. But there was also another smaller gate on the right door. It opened inwards by a man who was another comrade of Grant, Jerry, and Fen.
“Come inside quickly” The village guard waved his hand for them to enter.
“Ladies first,” Ivan said this habitually. Naina was happy to be treated as such by Ivan.
‘He definitely has a Noble background, or he wouldn’t know such etiquette.’ Naina thought as she stepped inside the small door.
The guard who had opened the door for them was looking at Ivan with sparkling eyes.
‘Ladies, first! Ladies First! Ladies, First!’ The guard repeated the words inside his mind. He was going to use them to woo and impress a girl in their village who he has a massive crush for a long time. After Ivan entered through the door, that guard closed it quickly and secured it with a bolt.
“Hello, my name is Grant. This is Jerry, Fen and that person behind you is Sam. Come with me, I will show you the place where you both can rest for the night.
Ivan looked around curiously. He noticed the thatched houses built inside the village along the dirt road. He wondered how if they could even block the cold winds from entering the house to keep its inhabitants warm.
The villagers seem to be sleeping. From time to time, they would meet a pair of guard patrolling on the road around the village while carrying torches in their hands.
Whenever they saw Grant, the guards would nod at him and look at Ivan and Naina before talking to each other in a hushed tone.
Just when they passed by the biggest house that Ivan had noticed, they heard someone wailing in pain behind them.
“Aaaa!”
