- Chapter 32 The Fight That Became Legendary 22
The wind blew around Max, stirring up his dark blue hair and rustling his clothes. His gold and purple grimoure floated next to him as he took a fighting stance, clearly ready to take on the remaining four opponents. If he was just a normal guy then he would no doubt have been utterly exhausted after fighting to such a degree, but Max clearly wasn’t ordinary and it showed in the way he fought his challengers, with strategic moves and a unwavering focus. Max’s remarkable combat ability was not only blowing the minds of the remaining combatants but also stunned those who were watching, though none of them showed it on their faces.
Mimosa, Noelle, and Mereleona were in complete awe, their eyes glued onto the fight as Max showed off his combat instincts. The only one who seemed indifferent was Tilith, who seemed to think that it was only natural that Max won, not the least bit surprised. Max was demonstrating who was the strongest mage present, and he was rapidly showing them the mistake the other nobles had made in picking a fight with him.
“Well,” Max said, shifting his back foot slightly to the side. “Aren’t you going to attack? Or are you going to stand there and stare at my pretty face?” Max flicked his eyes from one guy to the other as he used an old trick from his world to decide his next target. “Eeny Meeny Miny Moe,” Max recited softly as he pointed to one confused person after the other.
The other four nobles stared at Max with anger and slight traces of fear on their faces. They had never faced a newbie mage who was this strong before. According to their intel before coming here, the kid they had been tasked to take down wasn’t even a qualified magic knight as of yet, supposedly not even a threat. Furthermore, he shouldve only recently recovered from a near fatal injury given to him by Caitlin. No one had told the nobles that this commoner had a level of mana equal to a captain and was a complete monster when it came to using his magic.
“Filthy commoner,” one of the guys muttered, the one who had actually been picked as Max’s next target. “How dare you mock us nobles, prepare to be crushed to death. Stone magic- Falling Stalactites.” After shouting this out, sharp spears made of stone appeared far above Max’s head completely out of his sight.
Max however, thanks to Mereleona’s training had a good sense of all the mana within a certain range and easily sensed the stone spears in the air. The power of the noble that used the spell was rather disappointing compared to Mereleona, but Max was still having a blast as he mentally flipped to a new page of his grimoire. “Speed magic- Double Mirage.”
The next thing that happened confused everyone as multiple images of Max began to appear around the remaining four mages, creatimg the illusion of clones. To everyone else it appeared that Max had created replicas of himself, but im reality Max was travelling at such a fast speed that he was creating afterimages of himself. This spell was great at confusing opponents and Max had used it plenty of times against Mereleona and had actually gotten her to fight serious whenever he had used this technique.
“Mark, the hell do we do now?” The stone magic user asked, questioning the noble standijg beside him. “How do we fight against something like this?” Instead of an answer however, the only thing he recieved was a slap to the face as the mage called Mark brought his hand across the stone users face.
“Fool,” Mark sneered, not even sparing the stone user (Max now decided to call him Toph) a glance. “Did you already forget your training? He’s just a filthy commoner facing off against five nobles relying on nothing but cheap tricks and blind luck.” Mark laughed softly and shook his head. “We have nothing to fear!! He’s just a freak of a commoner born with a bit of extra mana, he’s nothing special. Fire magic- Fire Wave.”
Mark placed his hand on the ground and released a spell that caused the whole battlefield, excluding the area around the four mages, to erupt into a raging inferno as flames began to spread out in waves. The spell was so strong that it even passed out if the battlefield and began to approach the side where the girls were watching the fight.
The flames licked at the heels of the girls as they backed up to the wall. Mereleona opened her grimoire and was just about to counter the flames with her own spell when the flames began to fizzle out and draw back. They began to travel backwards, flames dissipating back into pure mana.
The girls had no idea what had happened until the flames had nearly been completely cleared, showing everyone the sturdy fogure of Max as he stood over the collapsed figure of Mark. The girls hadn’t seen what happened but they could more or less guess at it. Max saw that they were close to being hit with the flames and hurriedly acted, directly striking Mark down in an attempt to keep them from harm. Though it was an unnecessary action since they had Mereleona, it was still a sweet gesture that warmed the hearts of all three girls.
“You made a mistake,” Max said to the figure lying in front of him, a serious tone in his voice, his brow narrowed. “You made the error of almost hitting my friends who weren’t even participating in this fight, and for that I’m gonna kick your ass. Now get up!!” With those words he drove his foot into Mark’s side as he lay on the ground.
Mark, who was still conscious, coughed out blood from the kick began to struggle to get up. Max retreated a step, allowing Mark to push himself onto his two shaky legs, standing up unsteadily. “For daring to take things to far, I’ll finish you in the most humiliating fashion suited for a noble. To be beaten by a commoner without magic.”
Max took a step forward and punched towards Marks face but was interrupted by a falling spear of stone the pierced the ground in between the two of them. Max jumped backwards, doing a backflip to escape from two more spears that buried themselves into the ground. Toph, who had been watching from the sidelines, had summoned more stalactites and was now throwing them at Max. It seemed however, though he was throwing quite a number of spears, that Max dodged each and every one without using even a bit of magic, making his way steadily closer to the four of them.
“What are the two of you doing,” yelled Mark, a drop of blood present on the corner of his lip. “Hurry up and attack him!!” The other two mages who had been observing the match in utter shock came to their senses and chraged at Max, appearing to be close combat fighters.
“Strength magic- 1000 Pound Crush,” Yelled the mage on the left. “Punch magic- Fast Moving Jab.” As they came closer Max laughed mentally and raised his fists. He parried the first guys fist to the side and rammed his elbow into his stomach, knocking the breath out him. Then, stepping back, Max ran towards the second guy, meeting him halfway while dodging his punch with relative ease, simply sidestepping it and countering with a left hook to the jaw. The punch connected successfully and made a cracking sound as the man immediately dropped, no doubt down for the rest of the match.
“You guys are dumb,” Max said as he stepped over the unconscious body of the Punch magic user. “If your going to use similar magic then learn to coordinate your attacks together instead of just charging in.” Max took a step and broke into a run heading for the stone user. “However, you guys are so dumb you probably never bothered to learn how to work as a team.”
Seeing Max heading straight for him, Toph began to panic and started to fire spears made of stone at him with urgency. However, it was clear that Toph was too afraid to actually fire accurately and most of the spears flew harmlessly past him as Max rushed towards him. Though all this had happened in mere seconds, it felt like things were going by even faster to Max as he pushed his legs to go faster.
“You know what the mistake you nobles made before you even arrived here,” asked Max as he ran up and stopped in front of Toph, a grin on his face. “You came in with the childish mentality that this would just be a simple matter.” He kneeled down then came up with a brutal uppercut to Tophs chin, sending shooting upwards and then backwards.
“When you face any opponent, even those younger then you, you should go in with the mentality that your fighting an equal.” Max rubbed his fist as he looked down at Toph who was unconscious and had his mouth hanging open, now missing a tooth. “If you act like your better then the opponent you go up against then its very disrepsectful. Not only that but it only makes you look weak, pathetic, and becomes downright embarrassing for you when you lose.” Max turned to look at the last standing mage, Mark. “These words were mostly directed at you.”
Mark grit his teeth, his face becoming red with anger as he looked at Max’s face. He had always thought he was the best, the most superior ranked senior ranked magic knight in the entire 9 squads, only lower then the captains themselved. However this kid was destroying everything he had worked towards, everyone he had to step over to get this far was meaningless when faced with this commoner who had bested four elites.
“Fuck you, you maggot,” Mark shouted as he wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth. “Your just a worthless commoner with no right to talk to a noble like that, especially wjth the laws in place these days, you could be put in prison for what your doing right now.” In fact what he was saying was true, which was why many people didn’t pick fights with nobles because of the law that had been put on place.
Max laughed, not having heard this law in the anime, but since he wasn’t a magic knight it was probably true as only those in squads could probably get away with it. Taking a step forward, Max walked up Mark with confident steps and a smile on his face. “Well, maybe that law would stop normal people from attacking you nobles but let me inform you of something.”
Max stepped up to Marks face and flashed a cocky grin. “I’m old school.” He drew his fist back and rammed it into Mark’s face, sending him flying backwards into the unconscious body of Toph. “And the name is Max Dwayne, don’t forget it!”
