The Yuhao Chronicles - Volume 1 Chapter 40
The two roommates spent two hours of their afternoon discussing how they should fight in the upcoming assessment. After being satisfied with their plan, they both quickly ate some dinner, with Huo Yuhao going back to cultivating and Wang Dong deciding to seek out Tang Ya to ask some questions regarding the Tang Sect Techniques. He had asked these questions to Yuhao earlier between classes, however, with the little experience he himself has had regarding the techniques; he was unable to answer.
A little over an hour after they separated, Wang Dong came rushing back into their shared room. He had a mix of emotions plastered on his face, ranging from excited to worried.
“Yuhao! Yuhao!” He said eagerly, puffing slightly.
Yuhao was startled out of his cultivation but quickly calmed himself down and answered calmly, “Yes?”
He had a faint blush as he noticed his overexcitement, “I found the girl! You know, the one from the lake that you beat up!”
Yuhao decided to play dumb to tease his roommate, “Huh? What girl?”
Wang Dong went to answer him before realising that he was just messing with him. He pouted slightly before exasperatedly saying, “Fine then. I won’t say”
Yuhao chuckled, “No, no, I know the girl you are talking about. What did you find out?”
He smiled as he began to explain his discovery of the girl, “Her name is apparently Ma Xiaotao, an inner-court student. She is said to have a top-class fire phoenix martial spirit and that is why she loves the colour red.”
Yuhao nodded along as she talked.
“There was something strange though. She asked me and a couple of the other nearby freshman students what our martial spirits are. Every time we showed her our spirits, even for mine, she just looked more and more disappointed. She then, even more strangely dragged away this big youth who had these big bushy eyebrows. One of the other students in our class told me that his name was Xu Sanshi and like you, he has a really strong defensive spirit. I think it was a water-attribute spirit called the Xuanming Turtle? That could be wrong though”
As Wang Dong finished speaking, Yuhao thought, ‘So I guess my ice energy attack managed to hold off the demonism inside of her Evil Fire Phoenix for just over three months. I know I should help her out and find a way to solve her issue, however, something tells me that the best time to do so would be after I get my first fire-attributed spirit ring on my FrostFire spirit. The plan is to search for one in the mid-year break so she should be fine to hold out until then.’
“So?” Wang Dong said, noticing his roommate being lost in thought as if he knew something else.
Yuhao tilted his head slightly, “There is nothing we can do so there is no reason for us to worry about it. It is really good that you found that out, so thank you, however, we really should get back to cultivating. The younger you are, the faster you cultivate, so we need to make the most of our time here at the academy.”
Wang Dong smiled in acknowledgement at his roommate’s words. Over the last three months, he found out that his roommate was very mature and had an incredible drive to get stronger. He didn’t know why, and he hasn’t asked yet, but it is motivating just being in the same room as him.
Because of this, he had started respecting Yuhao so much more than he previously had. This subconsciously made Wang Dong act more familiar and affectionate to him and enjoying the acknowledgement he gives for breakthroughs and achievements.
On several occasions during this time period, Wang Dong had imagined what their futures could hold, imagining himself revealing his true gender and identity to his roommate and them developing an even stronger connection. However before his thoughts could get out of hand, he always focused back on why he hid his identity in the first place; to hide his true identity as a member of the Clear Sky Clan.
After this discussion, both roommates got back to cultivating for the night, slowly pushing themselves to their next breakthrough, and in time, their next spirit ring.
The next morning, the two walked over to their school building after eating breakfast. When they entered class, they felt a fervent atmosphere envelop them. Everyone had already gathered in their respective groups of three and were whispering to one another.
Every single one of the students were not in the extremely fortunate situation that Huo Yuhao and Wang Dong were in. They were not already close friends, they were not in the same dorm room as each other and they certainly had not been sparring every second night together. Without a doubt, Huo Yuhao and Wang Dong had the best teamwork and cohesion out of everyone here. While everyone else was discussing the skills they have and what they can provide to the assessment battles, the two roommates can use that time to practically improve themselves.
“Thump, thump, thump.” Three rapping sounds rang out. When the class heard that, it immediately became so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Zhou Yi stood at the entrance to the classroom, her right hand just coming back down to her side. The rapping sound had been from her rapping on the door to the classroom.
Zhou Yi still maintained her ice-cold composure as she slowly walked up to the platform. “I’ve already reported the list of teams that are partaking in the competition later. The competition will formally start this afternoon. It will use a round-robin system, and you won’t meet each other during the ten matches that you’ll be competing in, only teams from other classes. I only have one line of advice for you: If anyone tries to stop you from passing the assessment, beat the shit out of them. That’s it, you can all disperse. We’ll gather at the assessment area this afternoon.” When Zhou Yi had finished speaking, she hard-headedly turned around and walked away.
Yuhao turned to Wang Dong seeing as they had no effective class today, “Spar?”
Wang Dong nodded, “Spar. Let us go outside so we don’t give away our ability to any peeping students.”
In saying this, Wang Dong took the initiative to grab Yuhao’s arm and dragged him outside. The two followed the lakeside path as they left the academy looking for a quiet place outside the Shrek walls. Although there were several roads, there was a large amount of vegetation that covered both sides of the main road, and therefore, it was quite an easy thing to do.
After they had found a relatively flat area in the forest, Wang Dong asked, “Just like usual?”
Yuhao wordlessly nodded, before activating his Steel Space Dragon spirit moving from his position using the Ghost Shadow Perplexing Steps to attack Wang Dong.
