The Yuhao Chronicles - Volume 1 Chapter 5
Yuhao soon approached his house and he could see his mother washing their clothes, but her expression seems absent-minded. ‘I didn’t think she was that anxious for my awakening,’ thought Yuhao.
“Mother”, he shouted, bringing her out from her reverie. Hearing the voice she hurriedly looked around for her son.
As her gaze found him, he continued, “I didn’t awaken the white tiger spirit, but becoming a spirit master won’t be a problem.”
Yun Er looked devastated that her son didn’t awaken the fabled, white tiger spirit, but the following statement managed to relieve her worries.
“Who cares about that you didn’t awaken it. Just becoming a spirit master makes me more than proud.” She exclaimed happily.
“Thanks Mum, but there is something else.” Yuhao paused, unsure how to phrase it. “I believe they sabotaged my test.”
Yun Er stood still, shocked at her son’s proclamation.
Seeing her silence he decided to continue, “They used a cheap, low-level measurement stone to show my soul power at 1 then its proper amount.”
Still sceptical, she replied, “They wouldn’t. Your father is the Duke and they would be punished. Why do you think this?!”
“Mother, I have dual spirit essences. Do you understand what that means? It means I definitely have innate full soul power at rank 10. I have explained to you what has been happening around here lately. The duke doesn’t care about us. He hasn’t once visited since my birth, so you need to let your attachment go. Who knows what the duchess will do now everyone knows I don’t have his spirit essence,” said Yuhao, his voice turning cold and serious, seriously shocking his mother, not only because of what he was saying but the tone he had. He always was a calm child, so for him to now emphasise the seriousness of the issue, she finally decided to agree with him and leave. She met his gaze once again and nodded in confirmation.
Seeing the confirmation Yuhao was elated, not only to be able to finally leave this place, but not having to leave his mother behind. “Good mother, we should leave tonight, before they can plan anything. Let’s head to Soutuo City. Star Luo City is too close, and they will easily recognise and find us.”

Later that night, as the moon was out, Yun Er and Yuhao left through the back, servant entrance to the mansion. After a few minutes, they ended up on the main road, heading north. The journey would take them a little under two days, possibly pushing into the third as Yuhao wants to get his first ring. If they both were cultivators, then this travel time would be significantly shorter, however, Yun Er only has a scythe spirit with no spirit power and is, therefore, restricted to human travelling speeds.
He initially wanted to wait for Daydream to have as his first ring, in order to ensure he can get as many conscious spirit rings as possible, but even though they didn’t seek out Yuhao in the novel, he would like some form of protection and strength as insurance if they end up doing now. If he did wait, that would mean he has to stay on spirit rank 10 for four years, without any soul skills available. To him, that is just a little unrealistic, so he would rather get one now and work his way up to rank 20 over the course of the next four years.
Once mother and son walked for a couple of hours along the road and far enough away that there was no chance that they would be seen by spirit masters in the mansion, they decided to set up camp for the night. After they had a light meal of dried bread and fruit, they leaned up against two separate trees. As the area of the road they were on was commonly walked by villagers and those without spirit power, any spirit beasts nearby were killed off and any wanderers are quickly reported and slain. This allowed the two peace of mind to sleep without worry.
An hour later, Yuhao stood up and walked a little further into the surrounding forest. During the awakening, he cancelled the release of his second spirit essence, and he wanted to see what it was. Generally, when a spirit is released for the first time, the user receives a little bit of knowledge regarding the name of their spirit essence. Yuhao received the name for his spirit eyes but received nothing from his second, so he was hoping it had something to do with it not being fully awakened.
Once he was in a suitable position, he closed his eyes and began moving his soul force. Once it reached down into his lower abdomen, he called upon the second martial spirit he could feel. As soon as he did this, he felt the similar feeling of his soul force spreading through his body, into his bones and then being released through his skin. Unlike last time, he let this process happen. Yuhao, as he opened was shocked at what he was seeing. He had silver metal wrapping around his whole body, as an armour, that was shaped like dragon scales. Between all of the metallic dragon scales, there was a bright purple light seeping through, that seemed really profound and mysterious. He could feel his defences and durability improve, not only externally, but internally as well. All in all, the martial spirit looked awesome and Yuhao was very pleased, even more so when the name of the spirit came to the surface of his mind. It was called Steel Space Dragon. It was very heavily focused on defence, with a strong space attribute as well. With this martial soul protecting him, he has a lot more routes to take with his spirit eyes, not to mention the Ice Jade Scorpion Emperor he should receive in the future, if all goes well.
Yuhao decided to activate his spirit eyes and began thinking, ‘Ok so for initial effects, my spirit eyes give improve time perception, slightly more detailed vision and able to see a little further. Some very good abilities to have. I can definitely see better in the night than before. It is not anywhere near an effective substitute for night-vision, but it is better than nothing. I wonder if there is a spirit ring that gives that? No, it would be a bit of a waste. While I am thinking though, what should we do once we get to the city? I could probably get a job in blacksmithing. I always wanted to get into blacksmithing, but it didn’t have a big market back on Earth and have been trying to learn about it. It is a shame that the mansion sought all blacksmithing work externally. Mum probably is going to want to work as well.’
Once Yuhao confirmed what he was working with and a basic idea for his immediate future he returned his spirits and went back to where his mother is sleeping. They had a large amount of walking to do tomorrow and it wouldn’t be fair to his mother to make the process any more difficult than it needs to be. As he lied down across from her tree and went to sleep, contrasting to the peaceful night he had planned, he felt his thoughts being dragged into his body, where he believed his sea of consciousness resided.
