Thereafter of An Exiled Magician - CH 72
“I really want to head deep into the forest, plus I think it’s a lot better if we spent more time on exploring while minimizing farming. It’s a lot more profitable to do that, money-wise.”
“I see-.”
Farming is quite a lot of work.
Truthfully told, we’re better off selling what we find inside the Demon Forest.
“Isn’t that good enough?”
“I am against it.”
“Milia?”
As Aria and I were talking, Milia joins in.
“This village was established for the purpose of farming, first and foremost. As such, our cultivated fields should be at least the same as last year.”
“B-but, we have to quickly go and find out the secrets of Sui’s grimoire.”
“I, am fine.”
Sui also joins in.
“I can’t feel, the effects of the grimoire. So, it’s fine.”
There was an archive room in the back of the workshop in the ruins.
Inside the safe, were something like a list and a map kept together.
I’m pretty sure it was an establishment for those related to the witch cult.
The safe also opened because Sui was chosen by the grimoire.
Locks that opened based on magic signatures were commonplace in the ancient magician civilization, after all.
For the time being, we had decided to look at other places on the map.
I tried going alone, but couldn’t even locate one.
I think there were roads and landmarks there at one point, but it was all buried under the forest now.
There’s no guarantee that the buildings would have survived either.
The old private-residence like place might have survived coincidentally, while the others might not have been so lucky.
Well in any case, I won’t be able to find those places without Reno’s sharp intuition.
As such, we decided to begin our search once Reno was able to go there.
Fortunately, the closest establishment was only slightly deeper than where we were currently exploring.
Aria would surely want to go there quickly.
I get that she’s worried for Sui.
“But…”
Aria took glances at me rapidly.
No, even if you make those eyes, I can’t give you a rescue-boat out of nowhere.
“Well, Sui says she’s fine, so I think it’s okay to maintain the status quo on the cultivated area.”
“If Lain says so…”
Mm?
Isn’t my opinion unrelated here?
“? Then, we’ll wrap up by keeping the cultivation boundaries same as last year.”
“That reminds me, Lain nii-chan. Can’t we use Lain nii-chan’s magic to make the field go ‘ba-ba’?”
“That’s not possible. It’s almost impossible to affect the land here with magic-spells, due to the already high concentration of magic.”
In places far from the Demon Forest, normal farming took place.
However, things were a little different near the Demon Forest.
However, for the crops to grow properly, it had to be tamed by humans first.
This delves more into sorcery, so even I’m not sure about it.
There weren’t many documents left about that either.
It seems that humans signed a contract with the god of land, a long time ago.
According to the contract, by tilling the land, it supposedly became the property of humans.
In any case, that’s why there exists no magic that can till the land effectively.
Magic is weak against things related to sorcery, which could be used by everyone in older times.
Since you could just use sorcery, no one considered it necessary to create a magic equivalent.
It’s also a field that does poorly in weather-forecasting and future-sight.
That, and bedchamber arts*.
“Well, there are plenty of ways to make it easier though, so let’s try that this year. We might even have more time to explore while preserving the same cultivated area as last year’s.”
“…You’re right.”
Aria didn’t seem fully convinced, but she understood.
Now then, what happens now.
“Let’s head deeper into the forest tomorrow.”
“Alright! We’re going into new ruins, right?”
“No, that happens after you’re capable of defeating monsters. Like always, first you’ll find monsters, then you’ll train until capable of defeating them.”
Until now, every time we rushed into a new area, we’d always harvest whatever we could, before leaving just before we were found out by monsters.
I had no intentions of changing that stance this time either.
“I get why you’re impatient, but there might be monsters inside the ruins as well. If you don’t have the necessary power, you won’t be able to explore the place because of how dangerous it is.”
Last time there was nothing in the ruins, but a long time ago, the ruins I found in the Demon Forest were crawling with monsters.
Those ruins had a higher concentration of magic so I couldn’t compare them, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
