This Exciting Life - Chapter 4 God Is Rude
I blushed into my glass of juice and felt my face and neck turn red like a cooked lobster. How embarrassing.
‘Empty your mind, don’t get idiot thoughts!’ I kept chanting to myself like a mantra.
God coughed and cleared his throat.
“Ahmm, now Rebecca. I can give you two options. It’s true that I can revive you, but not as Rebecca, if you choose to revive in the world you came from. It can be a life yet to be born with a family or a child, teenager or an adult without any blood relatives. You’ll be an orphan.”
He paused.
“Of course I have the power to give you a family and alter that said family and all they know’s memories, but that would be wrong. However, if you choose a different world, then I can recreate your body.”
He lifted his finger.
“First, if you choose Earth. You can keep your memories of your past life, but that would also mean a whole new life in a world where your loved ones also live. However, you may never be allowed to contact them. If you do, it will have catastrophic consequences. I’d have to erase any trace of you ever existing, including all who ever knew you and I don’t want to do that.”
As he spoke those words, I went completely pale and shivered in fright at the very thought.
God gave a wry smile at my reaction.
“I’m very sorry if I’ve frightened you, but even I have to follow some rules. Cosmic orders and all.”
I nodded faintly and let God continue.
“As I said, no contact if you choose to keep your memories. However, I think it’ll be very painful for you to live on Earth with memories of being Rebecca. As such, I can also erase your memories and then it won’t be a breach of cosmic order if you do indeed meet your loved ones again. You won’t remember and they won’t know it’s you.”
Then his expression turned grave.
“Of course, I could also erase the memories of all who ever knew you, met you or saw you, even for a brief second or less, but that would mean thousands and thousands of people and that wouldn’t be fair. The living should keep on living without divine interference.”
I gave it a hard and long thought, but before I decided, I asked.
“What’s the second option?”
God smiled as if ready to give the ultimate sales pitch.
“Second option, as I mentioned before, if you choose to reincarnate in a different world, I can recreate the Rebecca you were on Earth or give you an entirely new body. It’s up to you. In both cases you can keep your memories intact or get them erased. Like I said, it’s up to you.”
I pinched the space between my eyebrows, this was a difficult decision. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that I would face a choice like this. I felt like I was in a game of Russian roulette. So much pressure. I opted to ask for more details in regard to the different world.
“I’m glad you’d ask, Rebecca.” God smiled.
“The different world you’ll be reincarnating into, if you choose the second option, is called Amaranth and is twice as big as Earth. It’s a mix similar to Europe and East Asia, depending on which continent, country or empire you are in, but with a bit of Renaissance touch to the society.”
For a modern city girl like me, the thought of living without modern comforts and technology was quite frankly bit a very high hurdle to overcome, and scary too.
Internet, iPhone and MacBook were one thing, but what about hygienic issues like clean water, proper baths, toilets tampons and sanitary pads?
No no no, absolutely not! As I was about to reject the second option, God held up his hand like he had expected my rejection. Like he had read my mind. Wait, I forgot. He could.
‘Can you like stop reading my mind? Seriously, so rude. A girl needs her privacy, you know.’
