Transmigrated as the Domesticated Rabbit of the Sick and Frail Villain in the Apocalypse - CH 49.1
The leader of the people who had come to meet with Jin Yang’s team was the person in control of the River Glory Base of City A. He was surnamed Zuo and named Tai. He had risen to the rank of lieutenant general in the army before the apocalypse struck and was a commander stationed in City A.
Another soldier, who appeared to be his subordinate, looked older with gray temples. His name was Kou Binbai. The other two with them were evolved people.
After the apocalypse, with the aid of the central government, Zuo Tai had led his men in an effort to establish a medium-sized base in City A: The River Glory Base.
In the beginning, the River Glory Base had been attracting evolved people as well as ordinary people from the surrounding area. Under normal operating conditions, ensuring the stability of the base had not been a problem.
But, just two months ago, when the evolved people in the base went out to encircle their prey, they had come across a mutated cow, and from then onwards things had begun to change.
That mutated cow was not an uncommon species. It had only been a regular cow raised by suburban farmers in the suburbs before the apocalypse. After mutation, it had grown enormously, and its attack power had greatly increased.
According to the known classification method, this mutated cow belonged to the class of level three mutated animals, and it should have been easy to hunt.
However, the evolved people of River Glory Base had encountered the cow several times, and each time, they had ended in failure. This mutated cow seemed to be extraordinarily intelligent as it played tricks on the evolved people in the base.
They hadn’t realized at the time that this mutated animal was the level five mutated animal, also known as an intelligent animal, as the central government had stated.
Gradually, some mutated animals had begun to congregate around this mutated cow. There weren’t many of them at first, and they were all level one and two mutated animals. The evolved people of River Glory Base had simply felt that hunting had recently become more difficult.
Later, with the passage of time, they had discovered that more and more mutated animals had gathered from all directions, with many different types and even some mammoth mutated animals.
Only then did they realize that something was wrong and noticed the abnormality of the mutated cow.
Hence, River Glory Base had organized manpower to carry out special encirclement and suppression of the mutated cow, which each time resulted in failure and heavy casualties.
This level five mutated animal was extremely intelligent, making it difficult to defeat. After several operations led by the base failed, the mutated animals outside the city made their first attack.
This was the beast tide that had severely damaged the unprepared River Glory Base. Many evolved people had fled the base and travelled to other city bases to seek refuge.
Zuo Tai had thought that they would die in the mouths of the mutated animals, but unexpectedly, after one or two small-scale beast tides, the beasts outside the city stopped attacking.
They only wandered around, and as long as the people in the base didn’t attack them first, it seemed as if they could coexist peacefully.
Following a period of calm, the base gradually collapsed due to a shortage of food. At first, the evolved people who had remained in the base had expressed their dissatisfaction, and then the ordinary people who had no evolved abilities had starved to the point of having to protest.
The base had fallen into chaos, and even the prestige of the military leaders, such as Zuo Tai, had suffered greatly.
Yin Yiliu was still reeling from the shocking sight she had witnessed when she looked down from above as the helicopter flew over City A.
Within a hundred miles outside the base, there were many huge mutated animals roaming about. It was the first time that she’d ever seen so many of them at once.
When they heard the helicopter, the mutated animals with sensitive hearing looked up one after another. Among them, the tallest was a mutated gorilla, roared at the helicopter while beating its thick chest, and the sound of its roar traveled far.
Only then did she understand why beast tides were said to be terrifying, because when a large number of mutated animals rushed up to attack a base, even the strongest city walls would be destroyed one day.
When that time came, ordinary people who lacked the power to resist would be forced to become food for the beasts, and only a few evolved people would be able to escape.
If only evolved people like them remained on earth, what future would be there for mankind?
Yin Yiliu was sighing in her heart when Zuo Tai signaled his subordinates to take over their luggages. When the person beside Jin Yang offered to take his, he waved his hand and politely declined.
“I’ll carry it myself.”
Apart from the people sleeping on the floor against the walls, the base was very quiet. Even the hawkers were unenthusiastic in selling their goods, with the majority of them selling old clothes and blankets.
Both sides of the road were dirty because no one had cleaned them. Dry feces piled up in the corners, and mutated mosquitoes and flies bred and flew in the dark places.
Yin Yiliu covered her nose with her small paw, finally knowing how well off City Z Base was.
“You may not believe it, but our grain reserves had been robbed once,” Zuo Tai sighed as he led Jin Yang and the others in the base. “We only regained control of the situation after one of my subordinates killed two of the leading young men.”
“No one wants to hit the common people,” Kou Binbai, who had been silent for a while, said abruptly, and the atmosphere became a little depressing for a moment.
If they hadn’t been unbearably hungry, these ordinary people wouldn’t have dared to rob the military depot.
But it was precisely because they were about to starve to death, and things couldn’t have gotten any worse, that these people were willing to risk being beaten to death to fight for their survival.
Zuo Tai had to consider the overall operation of the base. He couldn’t squander the little food they had left. Shooting the leading bird served as a deterrent, but it was also an action they had made because they didn’t have any other choice.
