True Alpha’s Chosen Mate - Chapter 179
“… did you really think I won’t recognize that body of yours, Rinnie?”
I quivered under Hugo’s eyes that slowly turned red. He was angry, and he terrified me. I winced when he squeezed my hip.
“Did you really think just because you used a unique perfume and covered your face with a mask, I won’t recognize you? Do you take me for a fool?” his tone was laced with mockery, staring at me in ridicule. “What? What’s with that face? Why are you looking at me as if you don’t recognize me anymore? Did you forget, Rinnie?”
My lower lips quivered as they parted. “Because… I don’t know you,” came out a tiny voice. “You changed.”
“Surprise?” he cocked his head to the side. “You promised, Rinnie. Yet, you broke that promise… breaking me in the process. Did you think I will stay sane and the same after what you did?”
“I did it for you –”
“And who are you to decide for me?” His eyes glowed dangerously, gritting his canines. “If I remember correctly, I told you I’d rather die. You didn’t listen. Why the hell would I have to listen to you now?”
I held my breath, clutching his chest tightly. Even though he kept his tone low, I could feel his unbending hatred seeping out of him. What did I expect? Wasn’t this what I wished? To get hated instead of getting nothing from him at all?
But why am I in pain while staring at him? The ridicule in his eyes didn’t even graze me, but the hidden pain beneath them hurt me more. Why weren’t you happy with your mate? Was what I wanted to ask him. Why would he still seek me, even after meeting his destined partner?
“Don’t look at me like that,” I whispered without thinking twice, staring at him straight in the eye. “Stop looking at me like that.”
“Hah… why? Can’t you take the hate from your previous lover, whom you abandoned?”
“Hate is what I deserved, not longing, Hugh. Don’t look at me as if you long for me.” I coldly responded, leaving no room for him to touch my heart. “I… don’t need it.”
I left him once, and I would do it again. Being with me wouldn’t help him in any way.
If we tried to reconcile, Hugo would be in pain again. Moreover, it would be too unfair for his mate. She looked kind and understanding. A lovely young lady who would live for him and he would live for her. Any more interference would result in chaos.
I didn’t want to hurt more people. Hugo just had to accept his fate and the pain would be gone.
“You don’t need it?” he scoffed, laughing as if he had heard the greatest joke in this world. “Why? Did you find someone else?”
“That’s none of your business.” I ground my teeth, pushing him away, but my action guaranteed a tighter grip.
“Who?” His red eyes glowed with murderous intent. “Three years I anguished and you… were fooling around? Tell me, Rinnie. Who had you so you can watch how I will tear him limb to limb right in front of you.”
“Have you lost your mind? Let me go.”
“Who?!” His voice thundered, bending over as his grip around my waist tightened even more. “Who is he?”
This time, my breath hitched. He was like a study wall that wouldn’t budge, no matter how I pound on it. I knew at this point that if I dropped a name, that person was guaranteed to die.
“Have I lost my mind? Yes, Rinnie. I was never been sane since three years ago.” He laughed mockingly, seething in anger that was piled up through these years. “Tell me who it is. I will make you the most miserable person in the world.”
I clenched my teeth, glaring at him straight in the eye. He meant every word he had uttered. I didn’t want to hurt him and use force. Right now, Hugo, although emotional, he was aware of his words and actions.
He changed. I ruined him.
“What do you want?” I asked, raising the white flag. “A night of passion? Sure. Let’s make out as if there’s no tomorrow. But once the sun rises, let’s not see each other again.”
“Hah! Ha! Hahaha!” He laughed and laughed, getting louder every passing second. “Ah… so foolish. But oh well, let’s do it.”
My heart clenched when an evil smirk dominated his face. As he let me go for a moment, Hugo mercilessly grabbed my wrist to drag me with him. But just as he did, I froze when I heard Edge from outside my tent.
“Luna, I’m coming in.”
“No!” I yelled almost immediately, gazing at the entrance of the tent. “Don’t… come in! I’m changing.”
My breath was suspended when I noticed the darkening aura in front of me. I gulped when I met Hugo’s brooding eyes, wincing when he tightened his grip around my wrist.
“Edge?” he whispered in disbelief. “Edge was with you? Ah… don’t tell me he is…?”
I shook my head in panic. “Edge has nothing to do with this.”
“Oh, aha… but your eyes tell me otherwise.” Hugo laughed, staggering back whilst trying to make sense of this situation. It was a misunderstanding, but he was already concluding in his head.
“Were you fooling with Edge back then?” he asked in amusement, insulting me without a second thought. I was rendered speechless as his anger was devouring his rationality. “Hah… Edge, huh?”
“Luna, is there something wrong? I’ll go in.”
When I saw the entrance move a bit, my eyes dilated as Hugo let me go. In a blink of an eye, Hugo disappeared from his standpoint to attack Edge, who was entering the tent.
“Hugo!” I didn’t think anymore as I lurched towards the entrance as fast as possible, arriving just in time between Hugo’s claws and Edge. I spread my arms wide, staring at Hugo’s murderous pair of eyes fearlessly.
“I don’t care how you caught up, but step aside.” Hugo pulled an aura on me, but that didn’t faze me. “Edge, why would you come in when you know she’s changing?”
“Alpha Hugo…?” I glanced over my shoulder when I heard Edge’s disbelief voice.
“Hugo Tempest, I don’t mind being hated by you. However, don’t you dare touch my people,” I warned coldly, swallowing the tension in my throat. “If you’re going to take me, just take me. Leave my people alone.”
“Edge is one of my people, my dear.”
“Even so, I will not let you touch even a strand of him.”
“Luna…”
“Edge, go away and tell Bowie I will be gone for the night.” I kept my eyes on Hugo while giving out my orders. “I will return, don’t worry.”
“Hah… haha!” Once again, Hugo just laughed at what was unfolding before his eyes. “Amazing, amazing, really! This is so funny, I am at a loss for words! But well, just tell them that. I’ll be borrowing her for the night.” He stressed, putting his hand down only to grab my wrist and dragged me out with him.
