Unusual World - Volume 1 Chapter 148 Prowess Of Rank 1 Cultivators Part 4
Once the competition between Trent and Trevor started neither wasted time and immediately started screwing with each other. Trent without aiming in the slightest fired off a barrage of arrows. Over two dozen of them graced the air in the span of 2 seconds. All of which intercepted Trevor’s shots altering their course before bouncing off of them and striking a different creature.
Trevor has a limit to the number of things that he can use [vector control] on at one time. Not because of a limit imposed by the ability itself, but because of the increasing demand of coordination skills and his lack of strength. Trent knows that full well because of their long friendship, so he began to exploit that during their competition.
Trent always fired more shots than he knew Trevor could control. Which allowed Trent to display his graceful skills on the battlefield as he racked up more kills.
[Pathfinder], [Thorn Snare].
Trent’s arrow glowed a yellow and purplish hue once it was released an immaculate path was left in the air. The trail left a dazzling road that zigzagged as it ran through the hearts of several different creatures. Once Trent’s arrow pierced through those beasts, outburst purple branches comprised of pure energy and covered with thorns not long after. The vines violently ripped out of those creatures’ bodies and wrapped around their flesh making them hurdle to the ground almost ensuring their death.
Trevor wasn’t standing idly by watching Trent win he interfered by snatching Trent’s targets from him. During multiple instances when Trevor was about strike a killing blow his targets moved in an irregular pattern. Making it difficult for Trent to strike them again. As the creatures were forcibly moved through the air they all were brutally sliced apart by a bird that’s feathers were as white as snow. Trent knew that bird wasn’t a real bird at all but a technique developed by Trevor called [transcendent wings].
Despite its fancy name Trevor’s technique isn’t super powerful it was developed to increased flight speed, his range of attack, and to add slashing damage to his repertoire of attacks. So, though it may not be super powerful it is very practical in combat.
As the two imbeciles fought amongst each other for the slightest edge against the other. A young griffin that typically inhabits the Gorgon Mountain range near by caught both their eyes. Griffins are well known ferocious creatures that typically live together in packs. The fully matured ones can reach the realm of rank 2 and rarely does a rank 3 king griffin rise up amongst them.
The griffin that caught both their eyes was a rare beauty for them because not only was it completely separated from its pack but its aura was also only at the peak of rank 1. Making it well within their limits to handle since its strength still hasn’t explosively increased like when it reaches the realm of rank 2.
Neither Trent or Trevor said anything about what the quality of the kill would equal to, so they faced each other and gave each other a knowing look before things kicked into high gear for them both.
“Move”, uttered Trevor as he brushed passed Trent.
“No, you can get your fat ass out of the way I saw it first”, rebuttaled Trent as be ran past Trevor like a gust of wind. Trevor tried to speed up ahead of Trent, but Trent’s running speed was faster than Trevor’s so he managed to take lead this time around.
The reason why both Trent and Trevor were racing towards the griffin instead of just shooting at it from a distance like their good at was because griffins in particular have a dence protective membrane made of air that shields it from range attacks, explosions, and harsh environmental factors like extreme cold. That’s one of the reasons why they can live in tall mountains without care.
Now troops randomly breaking formation may seem counterintuative, but cultivators tend to fight differently. Some excel in group combat others don’t at all, so this world is much more lax about soldiers going off to fight on their own so long as it doesn’t adversely affect them as a whole.
As Trent reached the edge of the wall he shot off like a rocket displacing the air around were he once stood as his figure melded together with the swarm of magical beasts. Once Trent flew off he was almost in front of the griffin but still a little bit away. With no ground to speak of in the air and no such thing as a flight spell existing in this world Trent got creative and twisted his body to land on top of the head of some poor creature. Once Trent regained his balance he used a technique that he knew would allow him to reach the griffin in an instant from that distance.
[Flash Step]
By kicking the ground over a dozen times in less then a second Trent is able to briefly increase his speed 3 times what he can usually achieve. Trevor blinked once and he already saw Trent directly beneath the griffin. As for the creature that Trent used as a spring board it was currently suffering from severe brain damage and spiraling out of control and into out going cannon fire. [Flash Step] can completely destroy solid ground when used let alone a living creatures skull. Trevor paid no mind to the dying beast, he souly focused on Trent’s actions as he sped closer towards him.
Trent the second he flashed underneath the griffin kicked upwards into the Griffin’s gut forcing its body to contort into an awkward upside-down V-shape. The sudden attack that came seemingly out of nowhere made the griffin release a pain filled screech. The griffin’s cry sounded just like an eagles and cut through every other sound on the battlefield like a violin.
After Trent attacked he could feel his foot getting torn apart by what felt like a thousand knives. The protective membrane around the griffin was troublesome, but it wasn’t something impossible to deal with. As the griffin scrunched up Trent grabbed the end of its lion like tail and held on for dear life. His right hand was getting torn to shreads but he didn’t care about that because he knew that if he let go then he had a good chance of dying because after he attacked the griffin generated a tornado around itself. The tornado sucked up weaker monsters around it and diced them up which only made Trent’s stand on not letting go even more firm.
“I ain’t that easy to kill you mutated chicken”.
With a firm resolve to survive and above all win against Trevor, Trent used his mighty strength and yanked the griffin’s tail. Trent pulled so hard he almost ripped the tail off the griffin’s body. Trent used the tail to fling himself upwards onto the griffin’s back. As he begun to land Trent pulled out a long dagger that was a few inches away from becoming a shortsword and dug it in between the griffin’s ribs.
The griffin rattle in pain as it tried to fling Trent off of him, but the dagger stuck between its ribs gave trent the extra grip he needed to stay on.
[Thunder Clap]
Trent slammed his bleeding right palm onto the back of the griffin which sent a shock wave as loud as roaring thunder all throughout the griffin’s body. Blood burst out of the griffin’s mouth as its body briefly expanded and some of its organs burst. The beast eyes turned blood shot from the attack but more from sheer rage. A feeling that it couldn’t act on because its body was currently stunned from Trent’s attack.
After Trent’s attack struck it disturbed the griffin’s flow of magic in the air in turn distorting the structure of the tornado allowing Trevor to come through. Trevor burst through the tornado in a dazzling fashion. He moved against the raging wind with a javelin in hand that he acquired after morphing his bow.
Trevor by using [vector control] accurately propelled himself towards the still stunned griffin and launched the javelin through the griffin’s thick neck. As the griffin chocked on some of it own blood Trevor took the opportunity to leap on its back and tack back his weapon by pulling it through from the other side.
“Your knight in shining armor is here. Now there’s no need thank me i know how awesome I am”.
Trevor said as he held the blood covered javelin as he puffed out his chest and stood heroically on top of the griffin.
“Calm down prince charming. The griffin’s not dead, yet its power is at the peak of rank 1, so its not going to be that easy to kill”.
“None the less I got this”.
“No, I do”.
“No, I do”.
And thus began a fierce battle in the sky were two prestigious cultivators turned a suppose to be epic battle into a school yard kid fight to see who gets the killing blow on the griffin. After about 10 – 15 minutes battling with against the griffin and each other the griffin was nearing its final breath. All the desperate creature could do now was constantly release a deathly wail as gradually fell.
Trent and Trevor who were still on the griffin’s back and stearing it towards the wall didn’t come out of the battle unscathed. They had to fight off dozen of other creatures while on the griffin back. That fierce battle only made them bond closer as brothers in arms even despite their constant bickering. As Trent and Trevor were still fight each other on who would deliver the finishing blow Innumerable screeches sounded above them. Over a hundred a.d.u.l.t griffin’s were flying high above and for some reason Trent and Trevor both felt all their eyes on them.
“Ha Trevor griffins fully mature when they reach rank 2 right?”.
“Ya”.
“That means this one is still technically a baby right”.
“Ya”.
“And arn’t griffins super protective of their young”.
“Double, Ya”.
Trent realizing the shit storm thats about to decend on him immediately conceded in there contest.
“You’re a far more brave and skilled fighter then me I have no doubt that you can find a way through this, so good luck”.
Trent patted Trevor on his back then ran away towards the wall as fast as he could. Trevor followed behind Trent and a griffin along with 100 others of its kind followed closely behind those two.
