Vampire Hearts & Werewolf Eyes - Chapter 4:Caught
“But dreams come through stone walls, light up dark rooms, or darken light ones, and their persons make their exits and their entrances as they please, and laugh at locksmiths.”
– Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, Carmilla
“Killing the bastard so that I can go home and talk to Salvador.”
“Figures,” is all Antonio says before opening the coffin. It is empty.
“I don’t believe it.”
“What the fuck, we came all this way just for the son of a bitch to be gone.”
“He’s not gone,” I say taking in my surroundings.
“Then where is he?”
“He’s in here somewhere, I can sense him.”
“Then we go separate ways in order to find him,” he says.
“No, that’s what he wants. We stay together till we get out of here.”
“Meredith what did you do to end up here?”
“I asked too die” I say.
“I don’t understand.”
“I lied when I said that I made the deal with the Damned five years ago, I actually made it fifty years ago. The reason I resemble his beloved is because I am her. I asked too die fifty years ago, so they granted my wish, with a catch. One day I would have to kill him. I thought they had forgotten for time went by and they never came. I met Salvador in each lifetime afterwards. It’s funny you know, I mean I never thought that I would fall in love, at least not until I met him. Enrique turned me out of need and greed, but not out of love. Salvador was different from most; still is but I screwed up big time.
“For I betrayed him with his own brother. So now, I pay the price for my betrayal. I wanted to get away from him, but now look at me. Here I am bound on a fifty-year-old promise to kill him. If only things were different and I had never made that deal. I mean I knew what was at stake, but I didn’t have anything to lose back then.”
“If you hadn’t made that deal, then you wouldn’t be here today.”
“An what good does it do me? After all Salvador hates me, and Enrique woke up. Nothing good will come of it. You should leave while you still have a chance.”
“No. I think I’ll stay just a bit longer.”
“If that is what you want!” I say.
“It is, after all Salvador send me and told me too make sure, that you didn’t find out that he was the reason for me being here. He said he’d catch up, something about paying a visit to an old friend.”
“Really!”
“Yes,” Antonio gives me a knowing look that I remember all too well.
We look and look but don’t find anything. Just as we’re about too give it a rest for the day, Antonio releases a growl and I know he is here. I can feel his presence and it isn’t a pleasant one. Antonio shifts into his wolf form, and I take hold of my katana. He comes without warning or hesitation.
“It is good to see you Gitana. I see you have a new pet,” Enrique gestures towards Antonio.
“Your point?” I say.
“You were the most loyal one; always so quiet never said or did a thing. How could you betray me in such a way? I would have forgiven you for dying. But not this I turned you taught you how to survive. Where wore they when you needed them, not only that after your new life you forgot. I have waited for you; but now you come with the soul, purpose of destroying me.”
“What do you care? I mean, the only reason you turned me was because Adam wanted me.”
“Adam,” Antonio murmurs as if remembering something apparently after being called my pet he turned back to his human form.
“What’s wrong?” I ask.
“It’s always been him, Adam, Xavier, Savior, Night, Shadow; are some of Salvador’s names in his past lives,” As Antonio says this I see Enrique’s anger turn into rage.
“You won’t be leaving any time soon, I hope you enjoy each other’s company,” He says before creating a dark flame that traps Antonio and me. That’s just great I came to kill him and he ends up capturing me without even putting up a fight. Great, just fucking great. He was gone before we knew it, and Antonio began to get nervous.
“Relax I’ll think of something.”
“That’s not what worries me,” Antonio says.
“Then?” I ask.
“I was supposed to call Salvador once we got out of here. But now…
“He’s going to wonder,” I finish for him and he just nods his head.
“It won’t end well!”
“I know.”
“Hate and lies what is there gain?
For all I know die
Do they feel pain?
They’re death is near
An aim to fight
For what they fear Is the light
So cold and far Is winters end
It comes too late
These broken bones do not mend
All the fallen tears shatter
Like broken glass,” Antonio says this slowly and calmly, as if letting it all sink in.
Word by word, somehow I already know what it means. Just like I know that, he means no harm, for he is only the messenger. Salvador told him too say this, but the question is when. Even though it came from Antonio’s mouth I know these words by heart, for Salvador told me this the night I betrayed him. He hit home.
“You’re not such a bad messenger after all.”
“Thanks,” He says this in mid laughter, as if forgetting that we’re trapped with no way out.
“I want to see him.”
“You will, eventually. After all, I don’t believe that we’ll be here forever.”
“I guess,” I tell him as I look for a way out. After all, he is correct; we will not be here forever. One of two things will happen, we die, or we find a way out.
“No guessing, now how do we get out?”
“I’m not sure yet.”
“Well think of something, because we have company.”
Two greyhounds appear out of the mist, well what use to be greyhounds. For they are overgrown, and blood is dripping from they’re fangs. Never let an animal taste blood, for when it does it wants more. These are now demon hounds for they have tasted the blood of vampires and taken the life of innocent children. This is going to be a long night.
“This should be fun.”
“If you say so,” Antonio half growls as he shifts into an immense black wolf.
