“AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!” were the agonizing screams piercing through Rui Yewan’s ears as he fell into the dark abyss. He grappled at air as he fell trying to grab the screaming Rui Li’s hands reaching out to him. The ear-piercing shrieks almost split his head in half as he fell into the inky darkness.
Her screams soon died down like she had been muted. She was still reaching out to him with a tear-stained face her lips moving in what could be transcribed as a cry for help but there was no sound.
Rui Yewan felt himself regain some strength as he lunged upwards to grab her arm. The free fall he was going through was suddenly interrupted as an inexplicable force pushed him forward to reach out for Rui Li.
But as their fingers brushed against each other and hope loomed over the horizon her entire figure vanished and he began to fall faster than he was before. An overwhelming numbness swept past every nerve ending in his body and for a moment his mind went blank.
How could this be? He was almost there and was about to save her from the clutches of that devil but just as he was reaching her she was gone. She was suddenly gone in the blink of an eye and he had failed her.
Stuck in a daze Rui Yewan barely registered the hands reaching out from within the darkness to pull him down. When he realised it it was already too late. He could hear someone calling his name in the darkness. As the disgusting hands pulled him down he struggled trying to listen to that voice.
He couldn’t help but think it had to be his older brother calling out to him but the voice was so faint. Rui Fei wasn’t here to rescue them. He wasn’t here to save them from this predicament. Succumbing to the darkness Rui Yewan suddenly jolted up terrifying the person who was trying to shake him awake.
Furrowing his brow while rubbing his aching temples he asked, “Xiao Yùnqì? What are you doing here.”
The little boy who had been so frightened relaxed his vigilance as he crawled back over to the brother with a bleeding head. He was asleep on the lower deck of the ship as his body was still considered weak from his life ordeal so he had to recuperate while drinking medicine every day.
Because of his past experiences, he was a person who perceived danger quickly which meant from the moment he woke up he immediately knew something was wrong.
After manoeuvring around the ship unnoticed he found the door of the cabin open. He knew this was a taboo area that no one should enter casually but when he saw the crew being chained up on the main deck he snuck in and tried to wake Rui Yewan who was passed out on the floor.
For the last five minutes, he had been shaking Rui Yewan while calling his name. He was also scared of the bad people coming in and catching him in the cabin making him a prisoner. He had already been imprisoned in his own body by that creature for years and didn’t want to experience the same thing all over again.
But he also couldn’t leave Rui Yewan here so he persisted. The echoes of Rui Li’s screams also gave him a sense of urgency so he kept shaking him and shaking him till he woke up.
“Dage…. are you okay?” He asked terrified by the horrendous looking wound on Rui Yewan’s head. He was about to reach out and check the depth of the wound but Rui Yewan stopped him staring at the floor blankly.
His mind was still muddled as he sat there dazedly. That’s when he felt a sharp pain in the palm of his hand. When he looked down his heart jolted in surprise. With disbelief in his eyes, he picked up a sapphire dagger and almost cried tears of joy.
Who would have thought something this good would be here at this exact moment? It was one of Ji Yao’s daggers with the only known material in the world that can cut through latrion. He looked up to a puzzled Xiao Yùnqì and said excitedly, “You are indeed lucky.”
The boy’s brows creased as he heard this. He didn’t seem to think so based on what he went through but for the past few days, he was being treated like a lucky charm by Rui Li who showed up constantly asking him to do silly things like blow into mahjong tiles for luck. Of course, she never won but now Rui Yewan was also calling him lucky. Just because you name a guy Luck it doesn’t mean he is lucky.
By the time he came back to himself, Rui Yewan had already finished cutting the chain off. He hurriedly hid the dagger on his side as he whispered, “Let’s go.” He wanted to see the situation outside and find a way to rescue his sister successfully.
The screams had stopped which was a relief and worrying at the same time. Relief in terms of his sister not being in that agonizing pain and worrying because their father might have finished the job.
It’s a good thing it was the former not the latter. When she screamed in agony Huishe Yue who was determined to kill that lousy Qilin immediately stopped and the two enemies glared at each other surrounded by suffocating air.
Huishe Yue gritted his teeth with a cold glint in his eyes glowering at Emperor Rui but the person he was staring at wasn’t intimidated despite being far weaker than him by a huge margin. “Let her go,” commanded Huishe Yue in an imperative tone as the flow of seraphic energy from Rui Li’s body to Emperor Rui’s gradually lessened.
Emperor Rui smiled slyly as he replied, “I think you misunderstood something. I am the one who’s got you by the balls not the other way around…. now let him go.”
Huishe Yue didn’t want to admit it but it was indeed true. Though he was consumed by his need to revenge he could only reluctantly let go. When he let go of Qilin Kai the pissed off Qilin burst into flames with murderous intent.
Meanwhile, Emperor Rui let go of Rui Li with her body hitting the ground with a loud thud. She curled up on the floor into a ball shivering making her look especially pitiful. Emperor Rui squatted down and grabbed her jaw forcing her to look up at him and said, “That’s daddy’s little girl,” before winking at her with a smirk on his lips.
Rui Li was enraged but she was also weak and couldn’t fight back. “How about we go eat some of the birthday boy’s cake. I might as well eat something sweet to get some energy for when I finally extract his aether and make his power mine,” he said before letting her jaw go.
He had seen that cake and knew then that it was Rui Fei’s birthday. He never knew the exact date but he knew as winter approached he would count it as a year closer to him getting what he wanted most.. Once he got that kid’s aether he would be more powerful than he had ever been.
