What My Wife Is A Country Bumpkin - Chapter 11
Minah sees Youngjae across from her. (What is he doing here? Why is he here?) She can hear her own heart beating for him. (Minah…ignore this feeling….he’s getting married…)
Their eyes met and they continue to stare at each other. Soon a bus pass by, Youngjae notices she’s gone. He looks around but Minah wasn’t seen.
The light turns green. Youngjae runs across the crosswalk and looks around. He didn’t see her. (Where are you, Minah?)
After a short moment, Youngjae returns to the car. “Head home.” “Yes sir.” Youngjae looks out at the window again. He sighs.
His driver notices that Youngjae has been sighing over and over. “Young Master, is something matter?” “No.”
Youngjae notices a photo of his driver and a woman that was hanging on the rearview mirror. He leans in and asks, “Who’s that?” His driver looks at Youngjae then at rearview mirror.
“My wife.” “Oh? You’re married?” “Yes. It’s been two years.” “How did you two meet?” His driver smiles. “Childhood friends.” Youngjae nods.
His driver continues, “We made a silly promise about marrying each other when we grow up. She takes it seriously. I never thought she’s grown to be a beautiful woman.” Youngjae smiles as he recalls meeting Minah when they were young.
“You propose to her?” “Nah. She did. I reject her.” “…Why’s that?” “I don’t want her to propose to me. I wanted to say it first.” Youngjae chuckles.
“Young Master.” Youngjae looks at his driver. “…You look happy when you smile when you think of her.” Youngjae’s eyes widen. “I’m sorry.” “…No..no need to be sorry.” “…Can I ask you something?” “Go ahead.” “…I don’t want to pry but are you happy getting married to someone you’re not in love with?”
Youngjae stays silent. “Forgive me.” Youngjae couldn’t say a word. (Am I happy? I no longer have that feeling.) He leans his head back and closes his eyes. He’s fallen asleep.
He’s off to dreamland where he was wearing a white suit, standing by the altar. “Youngjae.” He turns around and sees Nancy, the woman he’s getting married to. He takes her hand and said his vow.
Time to exchange the rings. He was about to put a ring on her. “Youngjae!” He looks up and turn to the door. There was Minah. “Minah.” He drops the wedding ring.
She walks up to him. She forces a smile. She hands him a red rose bouquet. “Congratulations. I…I’m really happy for you.” She turns her heels and left the chapel. “..Minah…Minah!”
He toss the bouquet on the floor and chase after her. He spotted Minah. He hugs her from behind. “Minah. I love you. I really love you, so…don’t go anywhere.”
Minah turns around and smiles. She reaches out and touch his face. “Sorry.” He was about to touch her face but the image of her starts to fade. “Minah.”
Minah disappears right in front of him. He kept yelling for her name but she never came back.
…
The car has reached Youngjae’s house. His driver notices he’s still sleeping. He unbuckled his seatbelt and gets out of the car.
He opens the backseat door and notices Youngjae is knitting his brows. (Is he having a bad dream?) He tries to wake him up by tapping his shoulder. “Young Master. Young Master. We reach your home.”
Youngjae didn’t wake up. “Young Ma–” “..ah…Minah..don’t go…” (He’s dreaming about Miss Minah…you still love her yet you never tried to look for her.) He tries again to wake him up by shaking him. “Young Master…Young Master…We’re at your house…Young Master…”
Youngjae jolts. He looks around and realized he’s still in the car. “Young Master…” “Hm?” “You’re home now.” “Ah…yeah…thank you..”
He gets out of the car. “Are you alright?” “…Yeah…I’m just…tired…that’s all.” His driver knew what reason was but he didn’t push it any farther. “Yes. Please get some rest.” “Yeah. I will.”
Youngjae heads to his bedroom. He immediately laid on his bed. He sighs as he stares up at his ceiling. He whispers, “I really miss you. Minah.”
…
Minah just comes home and went straight to her room. She sits on the chair by her desk. She pulls her drawer towards her and takes out a picture of him and her when they were kids. She touches the picture.
(I should be happy for you but why does my heart still in pain?) She then puts the picture away, facing down. She closes the drawer. She heads to bed and turns the lights off.
Two months later, Youngjae is getting busier since his wedding day is next month. His mother comes in the room, seeing her son getting depressed. “Everyone leave.” Every maids bows and left the room.
“Youngjae.” “What is it, mother?” He was putting a watch on his wrist. “Are you happy?” He stops what he’s doing.
He then puts the watch back on the table with the others. Without looking at his mother, he replies, “Of course. I’m happy. I’m getting married.”
She walks up to him and puts her hand on top of his shoulder. “Youngjae. Listen to me.” He looks at her. “If you don’t want to marry Nancy, then please don’t force yourself.” “…I’m not forcing myself,” as he looks away.
His mother sighs. “Okay. If you say so.” Before his mother leaves, Youngjae asks, “Is she coming?” His mother turns around and looks at her son. He asks again,”Is…Minah attending to the wedding?”
He looks at his mother. His mother said, “Invitation has been sent out but…she won’t come because of work.” Youngjae looks away.
She doesn’t want to see her son like this. (My poor baby…you’re still in love with her…yet you’re getting ready to marry someone else that is not her.) She left the room and head to the kitchen where her husband is, reading the newspaper.
“What’s wrong?” She sits on across from him. “Maybe we should canceled this wedding.” He looks up at her from the newspaper. “Why? Youngjae wants to cancel it?”
She sighs. “Honey. Our son doesn’t look happy. He barely eat his meals.” He folds the newspaper and put on the table. “What can we do? It’s Youngjae’s decision to get married to Nancy.” “But, Honey…” “Don’t interfere.”
Her husband stands up and left the kitchen. He heads to Youngjae’s room. Youngjae just got done changing. “Youngjae.”
He turns around and sees his father. “Father.” He comes in and sits down on the armchair. Youngjae then sits across from his father. “I want you to answer me honestly.”
Youngjae nods. “Are you sure you want to marry Nancy?” “…Yes.” His father nods. Youngjae lowers his gaze on the floor.
His father said, “Once you’re married to her, you need to erase Minah from your memory, your heart, and your mind. Are you able to do that?”
Youngjae looks at his father in the eye. “You will be Nancy’s husband and she’s will be your wife. You cannot have another person in your marriage.” His father leans in. “Son, I hope you make the right choice of what you want. Don’t do it just because Nancy wants to marry you. We both know she’s only into your reputation and status. She doesn’t love you. And you, son, you don’t even love her. What kind of marriage without love?”
His father stands up. “Think about it, son, before it’s too late.” His father then left the room. Youngjae remains in his room. He sighs. “…The right choice…”
