When A Ghoul Falls In Love - Volume 1 Chapter 131
‘Nell.’
The voice is desperate. I look up at the sky.
‘Nell, don’t forget me.’
I blink my eyes. Am I hearing things now?
‘Please wake up with only good memories, Nell.’
“Nell, let’s go.” Baek Joon Woo helps me stand. He takes my bag. “Lean on me while you walk.”
I look up at the sky again. Was it a ghost? I have been seeing strange things. Am I hearing strange things now? It was calling my name.
“Eli, are you going to walk me home?” I grab his arm with a smile, only to realise that I have called him the wrong name. But he hasn’t reacted.
Why did I call him Eli? I don’t know anyone who has that name.
“After visiting the pharmacy.” He glances at me. “You are allowed to defend yourself. Don’t get hurt. I would rather see other people hurt than you.”
Guilt wiggles in my chest, but I stomp it down. In our relationship, I am the bad, and he is the good. We balance each other out. “It’s barely a scratch.”
“You bled.” He scowls at me. “I don’t want to see your blood.”
“There is a way to hurt people without shedding blood.” I reply to him, “Didn’t you tell me that you read it in some book while you were researching for your future novel?”
“And you are still with me.” He chuckles. “I told you randomly that I was reading about poisons to kill someone in the library and you didn’t even bat an eye.”
I roll my eyes. “Who doesn’t wanna kill someone during high school?”
I want to kill Evie, but I won’t do it. Prison isn’t worth it.
“You make me feel normal.” He blushes, looking away. “There are times when I feel like I don’t belong anywhere. When I am next to you, everything falls into place.”
“I feel the same.” I grin at him. “Maybe we are soulmates.”
“Geez! Both of you!” Maisie, who has been walking behind us, interrupts scornfully. “Will you stop flirting? Get a room and do it until it’s out of your system.”
Oliver and Nick are a few steps behind her, immersed in some talks. Millie gives me a judging look. I have no idea what I did to receive such look from her.
The girl doesn’t speak much. When she does speak, it’s always logical. She is going out with Nick.
“You can just cover your ears if you don’t want to listen.” I make a face at Maisie. “Or you should start dating Oliver officially and flirt with him.”
Oliver gives me a lopsided grin. His eyes twinkle in delight.
I nod at him. I will help this boy to catch Maisie.
They are already in an xxx relationship. Maisie won’t admit it but she likes Oliver too. Even an idiot can see that.
She also likes torturing the boy. That’s why she says that there is nothing between them.
It can’t be helped since she is my best friend; we have our preferences.
“I have standards.” She glares at me. “Give me Joon Woo. I will date him.”
“Nope.” Baek Joon Woo pulls me closer. “You will dump me and take Nell with you.”
Maisie gasps. “How did you guess my plans?”
“You have been conspiring for so long,” Nick chimes in, laughing. “We already know that you want to marry Nell, Maisie.”
“No, I am straight.” Maisie grimaces at him. “Nell and I should stay single forever. Marriage is a trap.”
“I proposed to her today.” Baek Joon Woo frowns at Maisie. “Don’t give her ideas.”
“What?” Maisie and Nick shriek together. Oliver shakes his head with a light smile on his face.
Maisie steps toward me and grabs my hand. “Did you say yes?”
I chuckle and say, “I couldn’t say no.”
“Betrayer!” She widens her eyes. “You love him more than me.”
“Actually, I do,” I profess. “That’s why you should claim Oliver and train him as your future husband.”
“He is already trained,” She murmurs. When she realises her mistake, she huffs at Oliver, “I meant, I trained you in bed. Your future wife will be thanking me.”
We laugh at her — everyone except her and Oliver. The boy looks at her meekly while she rubs her nose in embarrassment.
‘Nell.’
The voice is back again.
I stop laughing; Maisie joins the laughter. They don’t notice that I am quiet — this is strange.
‘Nell.’
Someone is calling my name. The voice is pained and forlorn.
Each time, it sounds more hopeless than the last time. My heart tightens. Who the f.u.c.k it is? Why can’t he show himself?
I find myself walking along with Baek Joon Woo and others. Even though I don’t want to talk, I find myself talking to them cheerfully. Something doesn’t feel right to me. Everything seems like a play. An old rusty play. It feels like it has happened before, and I am going through the motions.
At home, it’s the same. My mother treats me silently, and my step-father tries to mend our relationship. But both mother and I are stubborn. I am sure that she’s going to get more stubborn after I tell her that I am pregnant.
Unfortunately, I can’t avoid this. Even an idiot like me knows that I have to say this to my parents.
After dinner, I pace around in my room. Who should I tell? If I tell my step-father first, he might be able to reduce the bomb blast that my mother will have. But I am not that close to him. He cares about me, but there’s an invisible wall between us, especially from my side.
I have to be brave. I take a deep breath and call my mother on her phone. She picks up after two rings.
[Can’t you come down and talk?]
Her bedroom is on the ground floor, and mine is on the first floor. She has a point. But I am not that brave.
[Mother, I am pregnant.]
