When A Ghoul Falls In Love - Volume 1 Chapter 133
“What happened?” Baek Joon Woo scrutinises my face with fear in his eyes. “When I came here, you weren’t here.”
“It’s a long story.” I glance at Maisie, who is signalling me to run away. Maisie doesn’t know about the strange things that I have been seeing. “I will tell you some other time.”
My mother is watching me silently. She and I need to talk. I smile at Baek Joon Woo. “Don’t worry. You and Maisie should go back home. I will go home with my mother.”
Baek Joon Woo seems to realise that my mother is also here. He releases my arms and greets my mother politely, “Mrs Solomon, please don’t be hard on her. I will take responsibility for her and our child. Please trust me.”
My mother doesn’t answer him. She grabs my hand and drags me away from Maisie and Joon Woo.
On the way, we remain silent. I glance at the crescent moon. Why did she ask me to follow the moon? It sounds like a fairytale.
When we reach home, she ignores my stepfather and takes me straight to my room. She closes the door and sits down on the chair near the bed.
For a long moment, we stare at each other.
“What happened back there?” She asks me solemnly.
“It was foggy.” I sit down on the bed. “There were some weird things in the fog. I found myself in a maze.”
“Maze?” She widens her eyes. “Did you go to Nether?”
“That… yes!” I curl my fingers. So, Killian wasn’t lying either. My mother also knows about Nether. “How do you know all that?”
My mother holds her head and sighs. “You inherited your father’s magic.”
This is the first time she mentioned him as my father.
“I have already figured that out,” I say.
“Aren’t you curious about your father?” She gives me a weighing look.
“Do you want to tell me?” I ask her sharply.
She looks toward the window. “I don’t want to, but I have to.”
I purse my lips. What kind of man was my father? Why did my mother fall for him?
“When I was young, I was quite curious,” She starts hesitantly. “I came across a lowly fae in a park. In fact, I spent a lot of time in the fae world. I was lucky that I only met faeries who were nice to children.”
The fae again. I still find it awkward to believe that fairies are real.
“Once the veil is gone, even humans can see the fae and other creatures.” She continues, “But they often forget about the fae and other creatures if they get disconnected from the invisible world for a long time. I also forgot for some time until I found out that my younger sister is a goblin.”
“What?” I exclaim.
“The fae kidnap human children and place their own in the human family.” My mother massages her forehead. “Rita was also shocked when she found out that she was a goblin. She told only me because she remembered that she and I used to play with fairies when we were kids.”
“…”
“Rita found my biological sister.” She tells me, “but my biological sister was already a fae’s woman. She couldn’t be freed and return to our world.”
Fae seems dangerous. Is Killian also a fae?
“Rita also went back to the fae realm. My parents think that she went to another country, but I know the truth.”
I furrow my brows. “How did you meet my father?”
“On the C street, there is an abandoned house.” My mother has a distant look in her eyes. “There is a small fae door there. It’s the back gate; there is no gatekeeper. Rita and I usually went to the fae world through that door. That day, I was going there alone when I saw an unconscious man near the gate. I took care of him. In a short amount of time, we became close. However, he disappeared one day.”
I don’t know what to say.
“He told me that his name is Zach.” She stares at me. “He also told me that he couldn’t tell me who he was.”
“You still fell in love with a shady man,” I scowl at her. “What if he was a criminal?”
“I don’t know, and I don’t care.” She shrugs. “He might be related to my previous boyfriend.”
It seems that my mother’s love life was colourful before she got pregnant.
“His name was Valentin.” She wrinkles her nose. “I have no idea why I dated him.”
“But why did you pretend not to see the strange creatures?”
“It’s best not to show that I can see them.”
“Why?”
“Fae are dangerous.” She crosses her arms. “When I was young, I was careless. Somehow, I got lucky that I didn’t encounter anything bad. My biological sister died giving birth to halflings. She was a child-rearing machine for her owner. I couldn’t do anything for her. Rita is living a somewhat better life. But I know many human females who became the victims. Human females have higher fertility than fae females.”
Used as a child-rearing machine… I don’t know what to say.
“Zach was a moon sorcerer. I think that you are also the same. If you ever feel lost, you should seek the moon. She will guide you to safety.”
I thought the moon is a natural satellite and its job was to revolve around the earth. How can it guide me? I decide not to ask these questions.
“I am relieved that you came out of Nether without getting harmed.” My mother takes a deep breath, pressing her hand on her chest. “You could have ended up like my biological sister.”
I won’t deny that I wasn’t scared back then. I felt malice from the shadows. If they had caught me, I might have met a worse fate than my aunt.
“From now on, if you see any fae, you should avoid them at any cost.” My mother warns me, “Don’t make any deal or eat their food. Never accept their help.”
“Erm…” I clasp my hands together. “Mother, I didn’t get out of the Nether on my own.”
If Killian is a fae, there is a chance that I already owe him.
