When A Ghoul Falls In Love - Volume 1 Chapter 135
At the break of the dawn, I walk down the stairs.
I don’t turn on the lights lest my mother gets alerted, but it’s not an easy task to walk in a dark room.
Cautiously, I make my way to the door.
Just then, my smallest toe slams against the foot of the table. I cover my mouth and let out a stifled scream. Why didn’t gods make eyes on toes?
This isn’t the right time to question the gods.
I reach the door and fumble with the latch. Thankfully, it’s not locked.
My escape is successful.
After what happened last night, I am still afraid of the fae things. However, my mother is scarier than them.
There is no way that I am getting an abortion.
I don’t know where to go. Should I go to school or Baek Joon Woo’s place? I want to run away from my mother who wants to kill my child.
All of a sudden, someone grasps my arm. I let out a scream.
“It’s me. It’s me.” Baek Joon Woo wraps his arms around me, embracing me tightly. “Shh! You will wake up the entire neighbourhood.”
I take a deep breath. Why are people sneaking on me these days? “Why are you here?”
“I was waiting for you.” He answers me with a low voice, “Are you okay?”
“I am not.” I press my face on his chest and whine, “I am not okay at all.”
“What happened?” He places his hand on the back of my head. “Nell, no secrets.”
“My mother wants me to have an abortion.” I inhale and exhale. The thought of going to the hospital makes me nauseous. “Joon Woo, let’s run away.”
I know that I am selfish. Taking Baek Joon Woo away from his family is cruel. He loves his parents and his sister. How can I do this to him?
‘He will hate you.’ My mother’s words echo in my head. ‘None of you is ready.’
He will probably despise me for saying these words.
“Nell, I won’t let anything happen to you and our child,” He promises me calmly. “Do you know why she said that to you?”
Baek Joon Woo always likes to solve problems peacefully. However, this problem isn’t something that we can solve quickly.
Once my mother makes up her mind, nothing can change her mind.
“She hates me, Joon Woo.” Tears sting my eyes as my vision goes blurry. “She told me that she regretted giving birth to me because she had to hold herself back from a life that she wanted. I think that my mother despises me for what happened when she was pregnant. She said that I could never understand her because I was like my father.”
My relationship with her isn’t good, but I thought that there were improvements. I was obviously wrong. She is still holding a grudge for what happened in the past. I didn’t do it intentionally. Why won’t she forgive me?
How can she even think of killing her grandchild?
“You can still attend the university, even if you give birth to a child.” Baek Joon Woo says to me, “Our lives will change, yes, but we can still live without holding back. We will have a new path laid out in front of us, but you have me. We can do it.”
I look up at his face. He already had an inkling that my mother might want me to abort our child.
Baek Joon Woo understands my mother more than I do.
“I talked to my parents after what happened last night.” Smiling, Baek Joon Woo wipes my tears. “They are angry with me, but I am glad that they didn’t suggest what your mother suggested. My father would disown me if I don’t take responsibility for their grandchild. They like you a lot.”
I blink my eyes. Do they? I have only met them a few times. Baek Joon Woo’s father is an office worker while his mother has a restaurant. Usually, everyone in his family helps his mother in the evening.
They are a tightly-knit family. Everyone has each other’s back, unlike my family.
“Mother says that you have an innate talent for business.” He laughs, scratching the back of his head in embarrassment. “My parents will help us with our child. We can stay with them after we get married. I am going to attend community college in this city. I want to be a writer, Nell. My parents have already given up on me for getting a job. They have higher expectations from their future daughter-in-law.”
“…” This sounds a little off. “Do they want me to go to college and get that MBA degree as they wanted you to?”
Though his relationship with his parents is good, his ambition doesn’t match his parents’ dream. They want him to become a white-collared man with a high paying job, and he wants to be a writer.
“I might have told them that you would become what they want if they let us marry and help us with our baby.” He turns his head to his right and coughs. “You already wanted to get a degree in management.”
Oh, he sold me.
“I wanted to get one, but I will feel bad if I disappoint your parents.” I blink my eyes. “Joon Woo, what if I don’t get into the college? I will be having this baby around the time we take the aptitude test for college admissions. What if I fail?”
“You won’t fail.” He pecks my lips. “I won’t distract you when you are studying.”
What is he saying? I am more likely to distract him.
I am fortunate to have someone like him.
“And your mother…” Baek Joon Woo sighs. “I will look for your father and find out why he left your mother.”
“What?” I widen my eyes. “No, we should let him be. What if he is dead? She will get hurt.”
“It will give her the closure that she needs.” Baek Joon Woo tells me, “After hearing what you said about her, I think that she was deeply hurt when your father left her. Still, your mother gave birth to you; she must have loved your father a lot. If we find out what happened to your father, she might change her mind. We only need some time.”
I understand what he is trying to say. However, is it possible to find my father who disappeared more than eighteen years ago?
