“What exact words did he use?” She grabs my shoulders and grimaces at me. “Tell me the exact words.”

My mother is freaking me out.

Ever since I told her about the fae, she asked to reiterate everything again and again.

“He wanted to be my friend at first,” I tell her, “I said that it was fine.”

“That’s all?” She looks at me suspiciously. “Did he use the word ‘friends’ only?”

I wreck my head. “He did use that word, but he said companion today. Doesn’t it mean the same thing?”

“Companion,” She utters through clenched teeth. “Did you confirm it?”

“I said: we are friends or companions,” I answer her, “whatever you meant.”

She smacks my head. “Why are you so stupid?”

“What did I do?” I rub the back of my head. “Companion and friend mean the same thing.”

“Why don’t you ask Baek Joon Woo if it means the same thing?” She snarls at me. “I can’t believe that I gave birth to a dumb daughter — not only that she is pregnant at eighteen, she also accepted a fae’s companionship.”

“Is Fae’s companionship bad?” I shrink my body when she glares at me. “I guess it’s bad. But how did he find out that I was pregnant when he…” Unable to finish the words, I look down at the floor.

“Fae can tell these things.” My mother crosses her arms and prances around like a tigress who is about to devour someone. “I am surprised that he couldn’t tell by your scent alone: he might be a young fae. This is one of the reasons I want to give up having a baby now — your hormones are haywire and you are also awakening. I can’t protect you from them. What if you follow him to the fae realm?”

I blink my eyes. Is this the true reason?

I understand that she wants to protect me. “But what about Baek Joon Woo and the others?”

I should have known that she would react like this. Other people’s lives don’t matter to her; but, I am not like her.

She won’t stop doing this. I have to make my stance clear to her.

“Mother, I am already eighteen,” I tell her with a steady voice. “I am an a.d.u.l.t. It’s my decision to keep my baby whether you support me or not. If you threaten to hurt my baby, I will leave this world. You will never find me again. I mean every single word.”

She stares hard at me. “Have you gone insane?”

“I can’t abandon my friends.” I scowl at her. “You can give up on your biological sister who was used for her uterus, but I won’t give up on my people. Baek Joon Woo and my friends are my people. They will stand by me even if the apocalypse strikes. Not only that I will bring my child to the world, but I will also deal with that fae. If you can’t accept my decision and harm my child, I will leave home and follow that fae boy to the fae realm because I can’t see any difference between you and him. Both of you want to hurt my child. At least, he might leave my friends alone if I go with him and become –”

She slaps my face.

“You can’t step outside this house starting tomorrow.” She grasps my arm and drags me to my room. “If you were truly an a.d.u.l.t, you wouldn’t talk like this.”

My mother pushes me on the bed. “If anyone asks for permission to enter, never say yes. It might be the fae who is impersonating someone you know.”

Then, she walks out of my room and slams the door close. I hear the locking noise along with her indistinct grumbles. Then, it’s completely quiet.

I didn’t protest because I know that it’s useless.

She doesn’t want me out of the house. Then, we might not go to the hospital.

My mother can’t make me get an abortion since I am an a.d.u.l.t and my consent would matter. The doctor won’t be crazy enough to do an abortion on someone who doesn’t want it. Furthermore, I believe that my stepfather will also oppose this if I make a scene.

The problem is that she might use some shady means.
