When A Ghoul Falls In Love - Volume 1 Chapter 144
“A child?” Colour drains from his face as he continues to repeat the word that sounds strange on his lips. Eli looks at Devil. “Was it Baek Joon Woo’s child?”
“Yes,” Devil replies. “But it was never born. Her mother killed it.”
She was pregnant with Baek Joon Woo’s child. Eli takes a deep breath. Though his heart is shattering, he can’t forget how she sounded when she told him that she couldn’t save the child. How can he save her from this pain again? Why is he so useless now?
“Did Isabelle do it?” Zachary Krauss asks Devil with a look of disbelief. “Nell was her daughter. Why would she do that to her?”
“Perhaps, she changed after a certain someone disappeared without even saying goodbye to her.” The devil looks daggers at Zachary Krauss. “She didn’t want her daughter to give up on college and live a hard life at a young age. Not only that she threatened Nell to choose between the child and her, but she also mixed abortion pills in her food to kill the child in Nell’s w.o.m.b. Nell was unconscious for days after that happened.”
Zachary Krauss becomes silent. He has not expected that he has been the main cause of his daughter’s misfortunes.
Losing a child at a young age and then, going through such cruelty later at the hands of his enemy… even now, she is suffering and he can’t do anything for her.
“Your poison worked.” Devil attempts to lift Little Marshmallow’s mood. “She would have been bleeding if you hadn’t given her the poison. It looks like the potion that you gave her prevents new wounds from appearing.”
“It can’t stop the hell that she is going through.” Eli lowers his eyelashes as he presses the back of her hand on his forehead. “My Nell endured a lot. Even now, she is suffering. I am useless.”
“Do you think that you are useless because you can’t stop her from getting hurt?” Flicking his ears, Devil says to him, “Loving someone doesn’t only mean that you always have to prevent your loved ones from pain. It also means being with them when they are passing through a storm. If you can’t be her umbrella, you can stand next to her when it is raining. Sometimes, that’s enough.”
But Eli doesn’t think that it’s enough.
Devil heaves a sigh. He gives a judgmental sidelong glance to Zachary Krauss. “At least, you won’t abandon her like a certain someone who left his lover because he wanted to protect her from his enemies.”
The moon sorcerer pinches his lips, and wonders how did this creature find out his reasons.
“Nell is smart.” Devil mutters, “Also, the moon told me when she visited the engagement ceremony.”
“The moon came?” Zachary Krauss exclaims. “Why did she come?”
“She came with her mother and her grandmother.” Devil clicks his tongue. “She said that you ignore her a lot.”
“Nell and you shouldn’t listen to her,” Zachary warns. “Even the moon has a dark side.”
Devil rolls his eyes. Who doesn’t have a dark side?
Eli suddenly gets up and walks out of the room. Amachi is finally here.
He finds Amachi heading toward the herb room. Eli calls for him, “Amachi, why did you take so long?”
“I had to check up on all the whiny nobles,” Amachi answers him tiredly. “You created a big mess.”
Eli doesn’t bother asking what he is talking about. It doesn’t matter to him anyway. “I found a way to stop injuries using Kiya flower, but it won’t stop her from going through it again. Can you send me to her memories?”
“You used the Kiya flower?” Amachi gasps. “Do you know that I found that poison in the battlefield? Only one Kiya grows once in a thousand years. Furthermore, the conditions are specific.”
“I will get you a better poison from the human world,” Eli tells him calmly. “Can you send me in her mind or not?”
“Why would you do that?” Amachi scowls at him. “It’s not a good idea. The seal is strange. What if you get stuck there? Even if you prevent her from going through it, it will only alter the memories she is going through. She will eventually remember the real memories when she wakes up.”
“I couldn’t do anything for her.” Eli holds his head in frustration. “I want to go there and do something for her, even if it turns out to be meaningless.”
“You might make it worse for her.” Amachi scolds him, “Get a grip on yourself. You cannot stop her from remembering. Also, we need to work on the antidote of the Kiya poison. And if you go into memories where you can’t do anything, what will I do if something happens to her body? I am not knowledgeable about human bodies like you.”
Eli understands what he is trying to say. He needs to be alert and ready for any complication. Besides, Kiya poison is dangerous as it stops bodily function temporarily. It’s akin to keeping a person in a cryogenic vessel, but it wreaks havoc on the immunity and internal organs of the person if the poison stays in the body for a long time.
“Work on the antidote. We will give it to her after it’s over.”
Amachi makes a face. “Why should I do it alone? You are also an alchemist, aren’t you?”
“You are a potion master.” Eli gives him a small smile. “I want to be next to her when she opens her eyes.”
Eli returns to Nell’s side. After a few hours, her eyelids flutter as she drifts out of her sleep. She looks at him with misty eyes and apologizes again.
“Nell, it’s not your fault,” He tells her again and again. She thinks that he is Baek Joon Woo, and he would continue to pretend if it helps her. “It’s my fault. I should have taken you away from your mother. Don’t think about it, Nell. Please get better.”
Nell stares at him quietly. “Is this a dream?”
“No, it’s not.” He strokes her cheek. “Do I feel like a dream to you?”
“You look different.” She sighs. “Older and more handsome… But it doesn’t matter to me how you look anymore. However you look, I will never stop loving you.”
Eli’s heart tightens. She is not saying these words to him.
