Eli can’t understand what is going on.

For the past few days, Nell has been drifting in and out of consciousness. She has stayed conscious for more than five minutes. In fact, she has been mistaking him as Baek Joon Woo.

Now, she is awake, but her mind is frozen at eighteen. Nell can’t recall anything that happened in the last ten years.

He is relieved that she hasn’t gone through the worst, but he isn’t happy that she can’t even remember him.

She only remembers Baek Joon Woo.

Eli has always been afraid of this moment. It’s happening to him for real.

“You are my father.” She pulls her brows together in disbelief. “Zach and Zachary…”

“I told your mother that my name was Zach.” Zachary Krauss clenches his fists. “Will you forgive me, Nell?”

“No,” She blurts out.

Zachary Krauss looks at her, wide-eyed. “I…”

“Baek Joon Woo must have found you.” She looks down, frowning. “Does it even matter now? Isabelle Solomon already killed our child. It can’t ever be undone.”

Her mind is truly stuck at eighteen.

Nell looks at Zachary Krauss scornfully. “Did you truly believe that I will accept you as my father if you reappear in my life after eighteen years?”

“It’s been twenty-seven years actually,” Devil mutters under his breath.

“Twenty-seven years?” Nell blinks her eyes. “What the hell are you talking about?”

Zachary Krauss sits down on his knees in front of her. “Nell, I know that I have hurt you and your mother. But I didn’t know about you. I had to leave your mother because it would have been dangerous for her if I had stayed with her.”

She clutches the blanket tightly, avoiding Zachary Krauss’ misty eyes. After a long moment of silence, she utters, “You could have checked on her once in the last eighteen years.”

“I couldn’t come to the human world.” Zachary Krauss clarifies himself, “I am a wanted man in both worlds. So, I stayed hidden in one of the cavities. If I had known that Isabelle was with my child, I wouldn’t have left her alone.”

Nell doesn’t speak. She doesn’t console Zachary Krauss either.

“I know that it’s too much to ask.” Zachary Krauss glances at her desperately. “I want to make up for everything. Can you give me one chance?”

“I don’t know,” Nell replies vaguely. “It’s also hard for me to accept someone as my father.”

“I won’t give up.” He smiles at her. “I promise that I will be a good father to you.”

“You should ask for forgiveness from my mother first.” Nell glares at him. “You also wronged her.”

Zachary Krauss retracts his hands, eyeing her in a stupor.

“Why are you with demons?” Nell gives a sidelong glance to Eli. “Do demons take other people’s appearance?”

Amachi chuckles. “There are those types, but this demon is not one of those.”

“Why should I believe you?” Nell can’t help but feel suspicious of everyone here, even if the pale blonde says that he is her father. If her mother can harm her, why can’t these people harm her?

“That’s up to you.” Amachi looks at Eli. “Eli, come with me. I need to talk to you.”

Eli follows him out of the room, still in a trance. He doesn’t know what to do anymore. Nell doesn’t remember him. This is the Nell who loves Baek Joon Woo. She feels nothing for him at all.

“Take a deep breath.” When Eli takes a deep breath, Amachi commands him, “Do it again.”

“It’s not making me feel any better.” Eli exhales, “Why is this happening?”

“Would you jump into a den of devils if you know what’s waiting for you there?” Amachi questions him solemnly. “Lady Solomon is subconsciously aware of everything. Her conscious mind is held back from the truth. As she gets closer to the incident that changed her life in her mind, her subconscious mind becomes defensive. Also, the seal is weakening as the layers of fog are undone. The earring that you gave her is enhancing her magic. She is pushing back the memory because she is subconsciously afraid of going through it again.”

It sounds complicated to Eli, but he understands what Amachi is trying to say. If a child touches fire for the first time, he will get burned. Next time, the child will do anything to get away from the fire, even if someone pushes the child toward the fire.

It’s instinct.

Even someone’s mind can protect itself instinctively.

It’s not that Nell doesn’t want to remember; she just can’t gather the courage to go through it again.

So, she is resisting the seal with her rising magic.

“Will she remember in the future?” Eli asks him.

“If she continues to avoid it, I doubt it.” Amachin scratches his chin. “Sometimes, people would rather live in a lie than face the truth. Right now, her lover, mother, and her friends are alive for her. Maybe she would rather live like this than live a life in which everyone she knows is dead.”

“Why are you talking like that?” Eli chastises him. “I am alive. Do I mean nothing to her?”

“Do you?” Amachi tilts his head, eyeing him. “If you do matter to her, maybe she will try to remember you. But humans are weak creatures. Even love isn’t enough to make them brave, and I don’t think that she was that into you before the seal broke.”

Those words jab Eli’s heart. He takes a step backwards. “She said that she liked me.”

“You know that there is a difference between like and love, Eli.” Amachi heaves a sigh. Why is his friend so dumb when it comes to love? “I don’t understand why you would fall for a human female like her. As much as I know, there are billions of humans and you end up falling for a problematic case like her. Take my advice. Send her away with her father. Forget about her and find a woman who will love you back. Why are you staying with a woman who would hurt you like this after everything that you have done for her?”
