When A Ghoul Falls In Love - Volume 1 Chapter 152
Everyone is dead? My heart becomes still, only to constrict itself tightly in the next instant as the words sink into my belly. This is impossible.
I rub my eyes. This is a talking cat. I am in an unfamiliar place. How can I trust this cat’s words?
“Fine.” I smile at the cat. “I will take a look in the mirror.”
“Hmph!” The cat steps away from me. “Do whatever you want.”
This cat hates me for sure. I glance at the man with golden eyes. He furrows his brows, seemingly distressed as he gets up on his feet. Even though he looks like an a.d.u.l.t version of Baek Joon Woo, I can see the dissimilarities. His skin is smoother, paler, and his long onyx black hair looks soft to touch.
I brush my index finger against the strand of his hair. It’s softer than it looks
His cheeks burn red as he bends down his head slightly as if he is a puppy who wants his master to rub his head.
Why do I attract weirdos? Isn’t a creepy fae enough?
When I turn away from him (without petting him), I hear a miserable whimper.
My heart tightens again. Why am I reacting to this? Is it because he looks like Baek Joon Woo? I turn around and look at him.
He bends down his head again, pouting his lips.
A few teardrops fall on the grey floor.
I am so not used to seeing a grown man cry.
“You said that I don’t remember you.” I frown deeply. The cat also said the same. Of course, I can’t believe this shit; but, I don’t want to start panicking yet. I will look at the evidence before I decide.
It’s just that I remember a few strange things: the voice that I heard talked about poison and it matches this man’s voice. Furthermore, I forgot about the voice later, and I saw this man many times before I woke up back in my room with Baek Joon Woo.
Now, I am here. It’s just strange. I don’t think that they are dead.
I am trying not to panic and scream as I run to look for them.
Maybe all of this is a dream.
“Nell.” He inches closer to me. “I miss you.”
“I am standing right in front of you.” I crease my forehead and fold my fingers into fists. “And why do you miss me?”
“You are my betrothed. Though you are in front of me, you are infinitely far away from me.” He reaches for my hand hesitantly. “Can I hold your hand?”
“You are already holding it.” I scowl at him. His skin is hot as if he has a fever, but it feels familiar. I don’t like how my body is acting as if it knows him. I jerk his hand off me. “Show me a mirror.”
The cat is nowhere to be seen.
“I need to work on the antidote before her body collapses,” The green-haired man mumbles as he walks away from me. I guess the ‘her’ is me. So, these people will poison me first, and then they will feed me the antidote.
I don’t know why, but I feel that they aren’t lying.
But their version of the truth is not necessarily my truth.
“I will leave you two alone to talk.” My father gives me an odd smile and goes back into the room.
The man and I are alone.
“Look.” I take a step away from him to make some distance between us. “Whether Baek Joon Woo is dead or not, I won’t like you.”
“Why?” He comes closer, blocking the light behind him. His warm, musky, and overwhelming scent sends a strange tingle in my veins.
I don’t like him. I only love Baek Joon Woo. I meet the man’s intense gaze. “Because I love him.”
He lets out a sigh. “You always say that.”
Do I? I guess so. But how does he know that? “Where is the mirror? I want to see my face.”
“I will show you one.” He grabs my wrist and pulls me along with him. I stare at his back. He seems a little disgruntled.
This man is lucky that I am not beating him up for this.
He takes me to the room at the end of the corridor and pushes me in front of her. I only reach up to his chest and this height difference is annoying as heck. Before I can complain, he spins me around and grabs my shoulders.
“See yourself,” He spits out the word with a low breathy voice.
The wall in front of me is a mirror.
My sunken hazel eyes with dark circles staring back at me solemnly.
I am wearing some strange white dress that looks like a fusion of western and eastern styles, and my hair is slightly longer, paler, and shinier.
The long ivory earring on my right gleams under the soft light. It’s cool and soothing to touch. My left ear neither has any earring nor any piercing.
But it doesn’t look bad.
The problem is that I don’t remember putting it on my ear.
It looks like I have lost weight as my cheeks are hollower and my collar bones are more pronounced.
“What did my mother feed me?” I gasp. “I look like I am a step away from my grave.”
“Amachi will find out what kind of poison she fed you,” The man assures me. “He didn’t take a thorough look at your body before. I will tell him to see what kind of poison it was.”
“You also fed me poison.” I turn around and face him. “Is that why I look like the way I do now?”
“I didn’t have any choice. He fidgets with his fingers. “I was afraid that you would be in pain. I controlled the doses. After you drink the antidote, the poison will be gone from your body.”
Anyone who poisons me isn’t already in my bad book. But I don’t want to make a scene now. I need to escape from this place. “I don’t look much different. What was that cat talking about?”
“Nell, I don’t know how you looked like at eighteen.” He points at my reflection. “But you should look older at twenty-seven. Human beings age fast.”
I don’t even bother to look at my reflection. Yes, I look different. But it’s not too different. And I have been fed poison by my mother and this man. What if the small changes are due to the poison? I look at him scornfully. “I will never like someone like you.”
He eyes me quietly. “Why did you say that?”
“Whether I am eighteen or twenty-eight, you should never call me old,” I yell at him, “especially, if you have feelings for me. Baek Joon Woo would have never called me old.”
The corner of his red lips curls down.
“Who would like a guy who looks like a girl?” I let out a snicker. “Your lips are redder than mine, and you are even skinnier than I am. What’s up with your skin? You look like a doll. If you wear a dress, you will look like a woman. Baek Joon Woo is better looking than you are.”
The man lowers his head and regards me with a dangerous look in his eyes. Did I offend him?
“I am only speaking facts.” I shrug my shoulder. “I am sure that some girls prefer men like you — Yeah, Samatha will like you. She is into older men. Should I introduce you to her?”
“You even want to introduce me to another woman.” He grasps my arm and pulls me closer to him. “Nell Solomon, aren’t you being cruel to your fiance? You keep talking about another man and telling me how much you love him after forgetting about me. I want my Nell who told me that she liked me. Give her back to me!”
I swallow my saliva. His golden eyes are glowing. There is no white in his eyes. The way he is holding my arms is painful.
This man is frightening.
“I don’t know what you are talking about,” I reply with a shaky voice. “I have never said those words to you.”
“You did,” He insists. “You also did this.”
He pushes me against the mirror, slamming his lips against mine.
