When A Ghoul Falls In Love - Volume 1 Chapter 159
On the way to the school gate, they see Evie in the corridor.
“Isn’t that Evie?” Maisie points at the girl’s back.
“That’s her,” Nick confirms. “What are you going to–”
He can barely finish his words. Maisie runs to Evie and grabs her by her hair.
“You crazy spinster!” Evie screams. “What are you doing?”
“What do you think?” Maisie gnashes her teeth and pulls her hair harder. “I am planning to give you a haircut today.”
Nick chuckles. “It’s a catfight!”
“We should stop her.” Oliver frowns when Maisie pushes Evie on the ground and knees her back while grabbing her hair hard. “How does she come up with these torture methods?”
“Oh, please.” Nick grasps Oliver’s arm. “I want to see them wrestle.”
Millie, who has been listening to them for a while, kicks Nick’s shin in silence. The boy steps sideways, trying to swallow his scream.
“Oliver, come with me.” Abigail heads toward the two girls rolling on the floor. “Samantha, you handle Evie.”
“Geez!” Samantha tsks her tongue disapprovingly but she doesn’t protest further.
In a few minutes, the fight is stopped.
“Are you insane?” Evie glares at the handful of hair on the ground. “Why did you do this to me? You are worse than a mad bitch!”
Maisie lets out a sardonic laugh. “You found out today? I am worse than a mad bitch.”
Evie stares hard at her. “Of course, anyone who is Nell’s friend is a mad bitch.”
“We will take that as a compliment” Abigail crosses her arms. “Because we have heard worse.”
Nick covers his mouth and laughs. These girls are so funny.
“Why are you picking a fight with me?” Evie asks Maisie. “I didn’t do anything to you.”
“Why didn’t you help Nell when you saw her with Killian?” Maisie barks at her. “Do you know what she went through?”
“What the hell are you talking about?” Evie stands up abruptly, frowning at Maisie. “Do you want to say that he was forcing her?”
“Of course, he was forcing her.” Maisie grimaces her. “Nell has a boyfriend. She isn’t the type who cheats on people.”
Evie snorts. “Is that so? But if someone forces themselves on me, I would be trying to defend myself. But Nell didn’t do anything. I saw her talking to him in a friendly way, and then, they went to the lab. When he was touching her, she didn’t move at all. Our eyes even met, but she didn’t have any shame. She didn’t scream for help or cry or push him away. It’s Nell we are talking about. It’s normal for women to do something unless they want it to happen to them.”
Then, Maisie doesn’t reply. Others also become quiet. Nick also wonders the meaning of Evie’s words.
Evie clicks her tongue and walks away from them.
After a long moment, Abigail says, “Maybe she was surprised. It’s not every day that she meets a rapist.”
“Or if Killian is an alien, he could have done something to her.” Samantha chimes in, “Nell might not have been able to move.”
“Sam, you are smart.” Maisie’s eyes brighten up. “That’s what has happened.”
“Now, it makes sense.” Nick scratches his chin. “An alien who can make people freeze… I want this superpower.”
Millie smacks the back of his head. Nick looks at her and cries, “Why do you keep hitting my head?”
“Why do you keep talking like an idiot?” Millie frowns at him. “You should keep your mouth shut if you have nothing good to say.”
“In this country, we have freedom of speech!” Nick stomps his foot on the floor. “I can say anything that I want.”
Millie inhales sharply. “Dumb.”
“Alright!” Maisie gets up and takes something out of her pocket. “I have Evie’s phone.”
“…” Nick blinks his eyes. “You stole it?”
“I borrowed it,” Maisie defends herself.
Millie raises her brows. “It’s stealing if the owner doesn’t know it.”
“I am investigating. So, it’s fair.” Maisie taps Evie’s phone screen. “God! She sends so many messages to Baek Joon Woo.”
“Does he reply to her?” Samantha leans closer to Maisie. “Oh, he hasn’t seen his messages.”
“I think she is blocked.” Maisie giggles. “She hasn’t realized that she is blocked.”
Abigail shakes her head. “I pity her.”
“Maybe we should set her up with someone nice.” Samantha suggests, “She will forget about him if she dates a nice guy.”
“No, it’s her obsession more than love.” Millie murmurs, “She won’t go away. If she had truly loved Baek Joon Woo, she would have respected his views. She wouldn’t have chased him despite the fact that he clearly loves someone else. It’s more about the fact that she doesn’t want him to be with someone else.”
Oliver nods. “I agree with Millie.”
“Crazy one.” Maisie shakes her head. She opens the picture folder. “There are his pictures.”
“Really?” Abigail looks at the screen. “He is ugly.”
“Creepy.” Samantha shrugs. “Why did Nell give him a school tour?”
“I will ask her about it after she gets better.” Maisie lets out an exasperated sigh. “I miss her.”
“Maisie, are you sure that you are not lesbian?” Nick looks at her doubtfully. “Bis.e.x.u.a.l?”
“I will be lesbian for Nell.” Maisie c.o.c.ks her head. “Do you have a problem with that?”
“Why would I…” Nick blushes when his imagination goes wild. “You two will look good together.”
His head gets hit by Millie again. This time, he doesn’t ask her why she hit him.
“So, there is something just not right here.” Abigail takes the phone from Maisie’s hand. “Only we remember him, and Evie. But Killian didn’t interact with anyone else either. I didn’t see him talking to the teacher either. Do you think that we remember him because we had interacted with him?”
“Not all of us directly interacted with him,” Millie mutters.
“But we have interacted with him more than the others.” Samantha says, “If he is truly an alien, it’s plausible.”
“Maybe he wants others to forget.” Abigail creases his forehead. “But why would he only want us to remember?”
“Remember Nell’s cryptic warnings?” Samantha widens her eyes. “She was worried that Killian would do something to us. Doesn’t it mean that she knows what he is?”
“If she knows, then Baek Joon Woo knows too.” Oliver lowers his head thoughtfully. “But why are they keeping quiet?”
Nick has been watching them discuss. He looks out of the window in the corridor. The school is quiet. Nearly all the students have left. The sky is turning into a deep shade of orange. “Why don’t we ask them?”
“Would they tell us if we ask them?” Millie questions him.
“Maybe they are trying to protect us.” Oliver contemplates, “by not telling us — it’s best if we confront them directly. If it’s dangerous, all of us should know. It won’t do us any good if we are unprepared for aliens.”
“I will talk to them.” Maisie places her hands on her h.i.p.s. “I am going to Nell’s house.”
“I will come with you.” Nick takes a step toward her. “Though you are a bear in a human form, you are still a girl.”
“I will come too,” Oliver says in a low voice.
“I want to come, but I have to go home early,” Millie tells them. “I received a message from my mother that I should come home straight after school.”
“Okay, you should go home.” Maisie doesn’t force anyone to come with her. “Abby and Sam, you should also head home. Your parents are strict. Oliver and Nick, follow me.”
“She is bossing us around.” Nick pulls a face. “When I just said that I was going with her.”
“Tsundere,” Oliver mumbles.
Thankfully, Maisie hasn’t heard them. She walks into her locker room and punches open Evie’s locker. After placing her phone inside that, she closes it and walks out.
“Hercules.” Nick corrects himself, “Female Hercules. Calling her a bear is an insult to a bear.”
Maisie twists his ear. “Do you want me to tear your ear off?”
Crying out in pain, he begs for her forgiveness, “Maisie, I am sorry. You aren’t Hercules. You are Snow White.”
She lets go of his ear. “I will deal with you some other time. Today, I am busy.”
Nick lets out a breath of relief.
They talk about Killian on the way until Abigail and Samantha take the road to their home. As usual, Millie leaves with them as they live in the same direction.
Then, it becomes silent. Nick feels a prickling sensation on the back of his neck as if someone is watching him. When he looks back, there is no one. Not thinking much about it, he follows Maisie and Oliver to Nell’s house.
