When A Ghoul Falls In Love - Volume 1 Chapter 165
Behind the school, Nick places a burger and a coke under the tree. He presses his palms together and mumbles, “I offer this food to Emma, the library ghost.”
Oliver looks at him doubtfully. “Are you sure that it will work?”
“That’s what she said.” Nick stands up and turns his back to the tree. “It’s time for us to leave. She said that she would meet us in the library after she is done with the food.”
Baek Joon Woo blinks his eyes. “Why can’t she meet us here?”
“She wants to eat alone.” Nick explains, “She is a ghost. Have some common sense. Why would she like to eat in front of the living beings?”
“You need some common sense.” Baek Joon Woo doesn’t argue further. He walks toward the school. “Did she reveal anything?”
Nick tells him everything that the ghost told him earlier. “She is quite nice for a ghost.”
“I thought you were scared of ghosts.” Oliver shakes his head. “How would she even eat that food?”
“She said that the dead people can eat the food that is offered to them by the living.” Nick scratches his chin. “She didn’t explain how.”
“I hope she doesn’t scam us,” Oliver mutters.
“She won’t,” Nick assures her.
After two hours, the ghost appears in the library as she has promised. The old librarian is asleep, and there is no other student other than them.
Baek Joon Woo studies the ghost silently while Nick grins at her brightly.
The ghost straightens her back, trying to keep her face scary. Ghosts have to keep their reputation. “Ask me. I don’t have all day.”
“Why?” Nick smirks at her. “Oh, right! You must be busy frightening the young and innocent children.”
The ghost scowls him. “Questions.”
“You told him that Killian is scared of something.” Baek Joon Woo starts solemnly, “Tell us what it is.”
“I am surprised that you don’t know.” The ghost blinks her eyes. “You are close to that moon child. She must have kins who know about the Council.”
“The Council?” Baek Joon Woo probes hopefully. “Council of what?”
“Humans like her,” She replies. “Humans who are more than you and your friend… They regulate the boundaries of two worlds. There are laws that creatures like Killian cannot break unless they want to be under the radar of the Council. If they are found out, it will disturb the diplomacy between the other world and the Council.”
“Lord!” Nick widens his eyes. “We have something like that?”
She nods. “If you go to them, they will help you.”
“How do we find them?” Oliver inquires.
“I don’t know much about them.” She looks up at the ceiling. “But people with higher sight can see them… their agents. There are families in this city that are connected to the Council.”
Baek Joon Woo lets out a breath of relief. “Do you know which family it is?”
“I know an annoying one.” She wrinkles her nose. “The Krauss family is famous. I heard a few ghosts talking about them… one of them liked to bully ghosts.”
“Bully ghosts?” Nick looks at her curiously. “How did they bully?”
“They started exorcising us randomly,” She hisses at him. “They wanted to control the city, but the Council intervened. They recruited the impudent one. Since then, there is peace.”
“…” Nick is speechless. Ghosts are bothered too.
“Thanks for your help.” Baek Joon Woo bows to the ghost. “I won’t forget this.”
“Bring me more food then.” She waves her hand casually. “I won’t be here for too long. My grudges are fading gradually. I will leave by your graduation.”
“Where will you go?” Nick asks loudly. But the ghost has disappeared. He furrows his brows. “What did she mean?”
“We will ask her later.” Oliver turns to Baek Joon Woo. “Let’s go to the club room. We need to look into the Krauss family.”
Nick guesses that Oliver is planning on hacking the city’s database. Among them, only Oliver can understand computers. “I am going to check on Millie. I haven’t seen her all day.”
“Okay.” Baek Joon Woo gives him a nod. “I will text you the updates.”
“Don’t go there without me,” Nick tells him. “Just text me where to meet at the gate.”
“I will.”
Baek Joon Woo hurries Way with Oliver. Nick heads toward Millie’s class. She hasn’t replied to his texts. Is something wrong with her? There is something that the ghost has told him and he hasn’t shared it with Baek Joon Woo yet. He wants to confirm it with Millie first.
When he reaches the classroom, he peeks through the window. Millie’s seat is empty. She’s not the type to miss school. He furrows his brows. Did something happen to her?
He glances at his phone screen. The messages have been read by Millie, but there is no reply.
She is an introverted person, but she isn’t the type who gets angry without any reason. This is odd.
Did Killian do something to her?
After contemplating for a while, Nick sends a text to Baek Joon Woo.
[Sorry, I have to leave now. Millie isn’t in the class. I will go to her house to see if she’s fine. I will keep you updated.]
Baek Joon Woo’s reply comes in the next instant. [Okay, but if you see any fae, run away. Stick to the crowded place. Oliver will be done soon. We will head out in a while.]
Nick releases his breath. Hopefully, Millie is fine.

His journey to Millie’s house isn’t easy. Nick starts seeing more than he used to. There are small orbs floating around the old tree that has been near the entrance of the school for decades. He sees a few ghosts just passing by, talking about random things. Now, he feels like someone is following him again. Instead of looking back, he quickens his steps toward Millie’s house. There are still people on the road.
He is sure that nobody will act during bright daylight.
“God!” Nick exhales when he is in front of Millie’s house. “I hope we find the Council soon. This kind of life is too much.”
And he can’t ever go back to the life of ignorance. He already knows that fae folks and the ghosts exist. Now, he won’t be surprised if UFO starts floating above his head.
But they are friends. Nell is like a sister to him. Baek Joon Woo is his best friend. Nobody has second thoughts about supporting Nell and Baek Joon Woo.
But what if the ghost is right?
He looks straight at the house. The door is closed. The curtains are pulled. Millie’s father’s car is in front of the house.
They are all home.
If something had happened to Millie, her parents would have done something, right?
Is she avoiding him?
Nick calls her number. Of course, he can’t just go and ring the doorbell like Baek Joon Woo. He is much shyer and cowardly.
Besides, her parents don’t know him yet.
They are too young to introduce each other to their parents. Millie has a dream. She wants to be a millionaire on her own. For someone like her, that kind of dream isn’t impossible.
As for him, he isn’t ambitious like her, but he might try his luck in the acting world. He does have a handsome face — not as handsome as Baek Joon Woo’s face. Thankfully, Baek Joon Woo doesn’t want to be an actor.
His smart girlfriend makes him worry a lot. She isn’t picking up.
In the end, he sends her a text: [I am in front of your house. I will call everyone and invade your house if you don’t come out in a minute.]
Nick looks up at the balcony. Unlike Nell’s room, Millie’s room is not connected to the balcony. But she has an access to it. He sees the door open and a girl comes out.
“Mi –” The name doesn’t come out of his mouth. The girl isn’t Millie.
Millie’s clothes are loose on the girl. She is gripping onto the railings, looking at him with her dark eyes. All of a sudden, the corner of her lips tilt up as she c.o.c.ks her head.
“Who are you?” He whispers.
There is no answer. Millie’s mother comes to the balcony and says something to the girl before taking a glance at him. She frowns at him as she gently ushers the girl back. Nick blinks his eyes slowly.
Something has happened to Millie.
