When A Ghoul Falls In Love - Volume 1 Chapter 166
His eyes grow wider when he sees Millie coming out of the house in the next instant.
He lets out a breath of relief. She is fine. Why does she like to scare him? And who the hell that creepy girl was?
Millie is wearing a simple shirt and dark jeans. She has her phone in her hand. But there are dark circles under her eyes.
If this is the only thing that he was seeing, he might have let go of all the doubts. But it seems that the words that the ghost told him are true indeed.
Millie isn’t human.
“What are you?” He asks her the moment she stands in front of him.
She doesn’t answer him. “Why are you here, Nick?”
“Why does your skin have a golden hue?” Nick questions her. “Why is your hair red? The colour of your eyes has also changed.”
She purses her lips tightly.
“Are you human?” Nick stares at her face. She looks somewhat human, but the tips of her ears are slightly pointy. Her skin has a beautiful golden glow and her hair is autumn red. She looks skinnier and brighter — not human. “Are you fae?”
“Yes,” She replies calmly. “I am a fae. I found out last night.”
Nick takes a step away from her, looking at her with disbelief. “You should say that you are cosplaying.”
“You don’t have veils on your eyes anymore.” She stares at him. “You know what you are seeing.”
“How did you…” He gasps. “Did Killian…?”
Millie doesn’t confirm his doubts.
“You are crazy.” He keeps studying her. “And more beautiful. This is crazy. What should I do? I think I am head over heels for you.”
She lets out a sigh. “Is this the right time to joke?”
“But you are so pretty.” He steps closer to her and cups her face, staring into her wild orange eyes. “Beautiful. I can stare at them for the rest of my life. You have so many colours in you.”
Her lips tremble weakly. Nick knows that she finds it hard to show emotions. He pulls her into an embrace, grabbing the back of her head with his right hand while patting her back softly. She coils her arms around his waist, staying still.
“My smart girlfriend is dumb today,” Nick jokes. “She thinks that she can hide stuff from me.”
“I am sorry.”
“Why are you sorry?” He strokes her trembling shoulder. “It’s not your fault that you are fae. My feelings for you can’t change just because you are different. For me, you will forever be Millie.”
“Nick.” She sniffles. “I am really sorry.”
“God!” He looks down at her teary face. “Are you sorry for being prettier? I am so afraid that you will find a fae boyfriend who can see how hot you are.”
Millie doesn’t smile despite his efforts. She looks at him with guilt in her eyes. That gives him an ominous feeling.
“You can tell me.” He assures her gently, “You will still have me beside you.”
“I don’t think that you can ever forgive me.” She holds his hand, taking a step backwards. Her emotions disappear in her orange eyes. “Nick Wilkinson, you have eaten my food, taken help from me several times, and made several promises to me. I, hereby, hold you indebted to me for the rest of your life. You will follow me wherever I go.”
Nick blinks his eyes, unable to understand what she is trying to say. Suddenly, he feels a burning sensation in his chest as if a chain curling around his heart, being pulled in the direction of Millie. He drops on his knees, feeling a sharp stabbing pain in his guts. He looks at her in confusion.
Millie is quivering, biting her lips. Blood trails down on her chin. Her pupils shake, resisting tears.
Nick realizes what is happening. He asks her through clenched teeth, “What did Killian do to you?”
“I don’t have any choice,” She tells him with a broken voice. “You shouldn’t have come to see me.”
“How could I not?” He curls his fingers. “Millie, you don’t have to do this. All of us are with you. We know how to fight him now. We only need to find the Council. They will help us.”
“They can’t help us anymore.” Millie shakes her head. “It’s too late.”
Nick doesn’t understand what she is saying. Why is it late? They only need to find the Council. Baek Joon Woo and Oliver are trying so hard. It should not be impossible.
Millie doesn’t go back to her house. Instead, she walks ahead of him, and he, feeling like a dog with a leash, follows her to the reserved forest in the south of the city.
The reserved forest is an environmental protection plan that the government had formed around two decades ago. The forest has been there, like always. But it has been deteriorating. Thus, the government has banned anyone from entering the forest for a certain period of time. People could go on day time, but they can only explore the outer region of the forest. The inner regions are off-limit, especially at night.
The sun has gone down. The sky has the same colour as her eyes. Nick can’t even open his mouth to question her. Killian has done something. That’s why she is acting like this.
But why?
The forest is oddly quiet. There is not even a random sound of an animal or bugs. He looks down, wondering if he can send a help message to Baek Joon Woo. He glances at her back. Maybe she can’t tell. He takes his phone out and quickly sends a message to the group chat.
[Millie=fae. Danger. Central forest.]
He sees Nell typing. Then, he drops the phone.
When he looks up, he finds Millie looking at him calmly.
“I…” He tries to come up with an excuse.
“They can’t be saved,” She says to him. “Nell, Baek Joon Woo, Maisie, and Oliver will die.”
“What are you saying?” He inhales sharply. “Millie, they are our friends. Why are you doing this? We have to save them.”
“It’s impossible now.” She turns her head toward a giant tree in the middle of the forest. “Abby and Sam are already there. Let’s go.”
“What the heck!” Nick shouts at her. “What do you mean?”
“Abby and Sam…” She looks down. “I brought them to the fae world this morning. Since they have also tasted the food I made in the past, they are indebted to me. If I didn’t do this, they would have met the same fate that others will meet tonight. I am trying to save those I can.”
“Millie, you are going to let Killian kill them?” He takes a step toward her. “What did they do wrong?”
“I can’t help it,” She whispers.
“Say it clearly.” He glares at her. “Why are you doing this?”
Millie replies in a quivering voice, “I was a changeling. They replaced the family’s daughter with me. Yesterday night, she reappeared. Killian held her in debt. If my parents wanted her back, they needed to take the debt. He was going to kill them. But he gave me a choice.”
“This is the choice you made?” He laughs sadly. “Killing or abducting your friends? What will Killian do to them?”
“He promised me that he won’t treat us badly.” She bites her lower lip. “Sam and Abby will have a lot of freedom. They will be treated well. You will be treated well. If we don’t make trouble, he won’t harm us. And I… Nick, I can’t say no. He holds debt over me and…”
“And?” What else is there?
“Killian and I are half-siblings,” She croaks.
“Are you joking?” He scowls at her. “He looks nothing like you. What if he is lying? If you are his sibling, why didn’t he say anything at the school?”
“That wasn’t his real face. He was using glamour to change his appearance.” Millie rubs her sweaty hands on her jeans. “Fae folks don’t lie. That’s also the reason why I could never lie to anyone. I didn’t like lying either. He is telling the truth. My mother was a lowly concubine.”
She pauses for a moment. “She escaped the war and brought me to this world. She changed the babies before she returned to the fae world with the human child. My biological mother died last year. He took the human girl under his care. The reason he didn’t say anything to me is that he was after Nell who is the daughter of the person who killed our father.”
