When A Ghoul Falls In Love - Volume 1 Chapter 167
[Present]
Nick looks at Nell. Her face is ghastly pale. He stares down at the floor. “After that, she took me to the fae world. She kept her promise to us. We didn’t live a cruel life like other slaves. Three of us had significant freedom. We weren’t treated like animals until we were found out. Samantha was killed because she took the whole blame on herself.”
“Killed?” Nell’s voice is dry.
“We were aware of Killian’s plans. He was keeping an eye on you.” Nick runs his fingers through his hair, not meeting her eyes. “We heard what happened to you and others from him. Samantha wanted to stop you from getting into Killian’s hands. So, we made a plan. She and I sneaked out and tried to create circ.u.mstances that would have made it difficult for him to catch you. We compelled your boss to kill himself and the cat that was possessed by Killian for a while. He found out after the cat was killed, but he didn’t know who did it.”
He exhales sharply, “I am sorry, Nell. You had to go through a difficult time, but we meant well. When we were found out, Samantha took all the blame. We thought that he would let her go because she was his concubine, but he executed her in the public.”
“Oh.” Nell drops on her knees. “She was killed because of me.”
“She didn’t regret it.” Nick bends down on his knees. “Don’t blame yourself.”
“Abigail hates me, right?” Nell places her hand on her chest, closing her eyes. “How could I not blame myself?”
“Nell.” Nick pauses for a moment. “It was Abigail who revealed it to Killian that Samantha was the one who plotted against him.”
Nell is speechless. How can this be? Abigail and Samantha are twins.
“Millie tried to save Samantha.” Nick takes a deep breath. “But he wouldn’t listen to her. Abigail changed, Nell. She loves that demon. I don’t understand how she can fall for him. She has turned into a cruel person. I don’t know when she started seeing Samantha as her competition too. When she got the opportunity, she took her down. As a reward for betraying her sister, Killian elevated her status into a queen. Even Millie was shocked.”
“I still can’t believe this.” She senses Eli’s hand on her back. Nell doesn’t look at him. Who is he? She doesn’t want to know, but she has no choice. “I don’t want to live like this. I want to remember everything… I can’t be a coward anymore.”
“Millie is in danger,” Nick informs her slowly. “He will even kill his sister. He sent me here because he knows that I am the only one who cares about Millie. Help me, Nell. If you don’t go with me, he will kill her for sure.”
“No.” Eli wraps his arms around her shoulders protectively. “I feel sorry for you, but I will never send her to that place.”
“I don’t want to go either.” Nick pleads, “But I can’t see Millie getting hurt. Even though she has done wrong, she really didn’t have any choice. He would have killed the people who had raised her, and everyone else she cared about. That’s why she made that choice. She saved whom she could have saved, although Abigail didn’t deserve it. I wish she had died back then.”
“No.” Nell raises her hand weakly. “It’s not her fault that she changed. She probably didn’t have any choice either.”
“Would you have done it, Nell?” Nick cries out in haste as he reaches for Nell’s hand. “Would you abandon your twin sister if you had one? I know that you would have never done it. Please help me, Nell. Millie will get killed.”
Eli slaps his hand away. He glances at Nell. She looks like she is considering Nick’s request. Whether she says yes or no, he won’t let her leave this world, especially after he has heard Nick’s story. Killian knows everything about Nell, and he has laid out a trap that even the Council can’t do much about. Nick is indebted to Millie. Abigail and Samantha must have agreed to marry Killian willingly for some reasons. As for Millie, she is Killian’s half-sister.
What about Nell? The promise that Nell made to Killian can be revoked. He will find some ways to do it. The problem is that he isn’t sure if it was Killian who had hurt her or he used someone else. There is a chance that Killian trapped her in a different debt. The cat won’t speak. Nick doesn’t know what exactly happened that night either.
“Why did he want to kill Maisie and Oliver?” Eli questions him. “He let Millie take you and the other girls?”
‘Maisie had offended him, I think.” Nick rubs his forehead. “And she was the second closest person to Nell. As for Oliver, I think that he didn’t want to take any boy to the fae realm, but he made an exception for me because Millie asked for it. I am sure that he made some deal with her too.”
“If she is a princess, then she also has a say in court.” Eli muses, “She must have given her full support to Killian. Is there any other contender to the throne?”
“She mentioned once that there was one more boy who might be alive.” Nick replies in a low tone, “The child’s mother was a human. They went missing a long time ago. The king couldn’t find her back then. They don’t know where he is.”
“Do you know his name?” Eli looks at him with interest. Maybe he can drag that Killian off the throne. It will be easier to deal with him then.
“Li Jun,” Nick answers him. “He was given his mother’s surname because his mother wasn’t a royal. Millie didn’t even get a name from her parents, but she still has some status because of her royal blood.”
“So, there are three survivors.” Eli nods his head. “I will look for that boy.”
“I don’t think that he can be found.” Nick shrugs when Eli raises his brow. “If he is alive, he won’t be as powerful as Killian is. He can’t fight for the throne. Besides, Killian has built the largest court in the fae realm. All courts other than the winter court have bowed down to his power.”
Eli doesn’t like the way Nick is praising Killian, but he decides not to say anything about it. Nick is helping him a lot by speaking about Killian. “Your master is Millie, not Killian.”
“She is indebted to him.” Nick sighs. “Indirectly, he owns me.”
“Nobody owns anyone.” Nell murmurs softly, “I will destroy that bastard.”
Eli takes a long glance at her. She is biting her lower lip now. Her hands are fisted. Wanting revenge is natural. Feeling rage means she is alive. If she wants this, he will stand beside her. In any case, Killian has to die.
“Will you come with me, Nell?” Nick asks her again. “Even after everything, I still care about Millie. I can’t see her suffer more.”
What will she do? Eli clenches his teeth when she turns her head toward him. If she begs him to let her go there… If she cries… No, he won’t let her go. Even if she doesn’t remember him, he will keep her beside him. He opens his mouth to tell her that.
“Can you lock him in a room?” Nell points at Nick. “Maybe you should poison him and put him to sleep. I don’t know what kind of spells they must have put on him, but I won’t let Nick go back to the fae realm whether I go there or not. He must stay here. Do that for me, please.”
“…” Eli is taken aback. Whether she is eighteen or twenty-seven, Nell is quite… sly.
“Nell!” Nick shouts as he stands up, ready to escape. In the next instant, he finds himself lying on the floor. “This isn’t good! I am here as an envoy. If you imprison me, he will send an army.”
“Do I look like I care?” Eli smiles at him brightly. Nell trusts him. If she didn’t trust him, she wouldn’t have asked him to do this. His wife truly cares for him unconsciously. How to make her admit this?
“Nell, don’t do this.” Nick looks at her and hollers desperately, “Millie will be tortured. Please, Nell, I still love her.”
“You are right about one thing.” Nell crosses her arms, standing up. “I won’t abandon my people. I will save Millie and Abigail. Then, I am going to beat them up to death.”
Eli places his hand on Nick’s forehead, mumbling a spell on his soul. Nick closes his eyes as a small smile forms on his lips. Perhaps, everything will be alright.
