Why Defeat The Devil? - Chapter 16
“Uh”
Xi En’s expression stiffened as he was speechless.
As someone from another world, he found the girl to be incredibly full of herself. If they had been in his previous life, she would definitely be considered an arrogant poser.
They were currently in a world of sword and magic, however. There were deities and a Demon, nobilities and royals. Other than the humans, there were other races as well. Perhaps her words meant nothing in this world.
It did mean one thing, however.
The girl in front of him must either be someone utterly egotistical or a young lady from an influential family.
Whichever it was, Xi En wanted nothing to do with her. By the looks of things, all kinds of trouble would likely crop up in the future.
Xi En was quick to make his decision.
“My apologies, please forgive me for asking a stupid question. I’ll take my leave now.”
With that, Xi En bowed humbly and fled as quickly as he could.
“You”
The girl was surprised.
She obviously did not expect Xi En to behave in such a manner. When she finally snapped out of her surprise, Xi En had already blended into the crowd and could no longer be traced.
For a while, the girl stared at the direction in which he took off. Then, a chuckle escaped her. Her laugh was extremely melodious, like tinkling silver bells.
Had passers-by turned their heads, did a double take, or were infatuated with the sound, it was to be expected. Instead, no one took notice of the pretty girl around them. They all walked past her, oblivious to her presence.
Until
“Miss.”
The girl stopped laughing as an emotionless voice sounded. Someone walked toward the girl, parting the crowd. If Xi En were around, he would have been bewildered.
The person who came over looked identical to the girl. It was as if they came from the same mold. Be it her height, figure, hair or eye color, everything was exactly the same.
The only difference was that this girl who appeared stoic wore a maid’s outfit instead of a dress.
If the earlier girl was the precious daughter of a wealthy household who fancied a walk on the streets, then this girl who looked alike was a capable and trustworthy maid.
“You’re here, Laxia.”
The girl wore a friendly gleeful smile when she saw the look-alike maid coming through the crowd.
“Yes, I’ve bought what you wanted, Miss.”
The maid who was called Laxia replied in a distant tone, carrying a bag in her arms. From the aroma wafting from the bag, it was probably delicious food. Laxia was probably sent by the girl to buy some delicacies.
Seeing the joyful expression on the girl, Laxia was puzzled.
“You seem to be in a very good mood, Miss Laixia.”
Laxia saw through her immediately. The girl, Laixia, did not keep it from her either.
“No worries, I just met an interesting Adventurer.” It seemed that Laixia was still thinking about the earlier encounter as she grinned and said, “Not out of fear or reverence, not because he knows my origin either, he appeared scared of getting into trouble just because I didn’t give him my name, and then he fled. It’s my first time meeting someone like that.”
Laxia did not question further after what she heard. Although she was not sure what happened, she was used to Laixia doing something unexpected at the spur of the moment. It was because the young lady, who looked like her twin sister, whom Laxia served was a frisky and mischievous girl.
She must have done something on an impulse, but
“It’s been a long while since you’re so happy, Miss.”
Laxia spoke her mind.
“Seems like it.” Laixia reeled in a bit of her grin and said ruefully, “How long has it been since I’ve laughed in such delight?”
Laixia could not even remember. She did not plan to recall it anyway, so she put on a happy face promptly.
“Speaking of which”
Laixia looked back to where Xi En had left in a hurry.
“The mana on that Adventurer seems a little special and the parcel he carried feels like a familiar force. It isn’t just an illusion, is it?”
Laixia was absorbed in her thoughts.
The reason she talked to Xi En was not capricious after hearing what she said. It was for this other reason.
“My ‘Recognition Manipulation’ didn’t seem to be effective on him, or else he wouldn’t have noticed my presence. He immediately shifted his gaze on me even if I had talked to him first,” Laixia murmured to herself.
“He wouldn’t be”
As if remembering something, Laixia’s expression turned aloof and ominous.
“Miss?”
Not knowing what Laixia was thinking, Laxia hollered to snap her out of her trance.
“It’s nothing. Let’s go,” Laixia told Laxia and then wore her smile again.
It was only inevitable
“Looks like we’ll have to stay a little longer in this town.”
With that thought in mind, Laixia turned to leave the place. Without saying another word, Laxia followed her in silence.
All the while, no one around them seemed to notice the pair of girls who looked like twins. They left silently, like spirits which no one could sense.
On the other side, Xi En who did not know that he had been targeted felt relieved.
“Luckily, I’m smart.”
He heaved a sigh of relief after making sure he was already some distance away. Not having solved his current problem, he did not relish the thought of getting a new one.
“Let’s look for somewhere to rest first and enjoy my first night in the alternate universe’s civilization.”
Xi En decided that he needed a respite from his troubles. After ten days of being a barbarian, he was dying for a change in his living conditions. As for everything else
“I’ll decide when the time comes.”
Subsequently, Xi En began to roam the town.
