Why Defeat The Devil? - Chapter 4
Although he no longer had any memory of his past life, Xi En was well aware that he was just a lay person who had no prior battling experience.
From the little he could remember, he speculated that he must have been born in a peaceful country during a peaceful era. Let alone battling, he probably did not even have much fighting experience.
Let Xi En battle belligerent monsters of this alternate universe? His chances of winning was almost nil.
In spite of it, everything was destined to change the moment Xi En wielded the Sacred Sword and picked up one skill after another.
“Squawk!”
The feral bird was crying out aggressively.
Clang!
The Sacred Sword in Xi En’s grip continued to glow.
Feeling the tide of energy from the Sacred Sword surging within him, Xi En unbelievably calmed down. Time around him seemed to slow down. The bird which was hurtling down with a savage energy seemed to be sluggish too.
“Perception of Enemy” blared, crisper and louder than ever, allowing Xi En to gauge the monster’s speed and position as it swooped down from the sky.
“Deflect” poked at Xi En’s instincts, causing his body to move with the ideal movement at the optimal deflecting speed, timing, and direction.
“Double Grip Sword” which he had just picked up flooded Xi En’s mind with countless methods and techniques of wielding the Sacred Sword, giving him the confidence to use the weapon in his grip to kill the enemy before him.
Hence
Swoosh!
The moment the bird was going to barrel into Xi En, Xi En moved as if he was assisted by god. Following the indication given by “Deflect”, he scooted some distance away to his left.
The bird brushed past where he stood a second ago. One of its wings flapped just next to Xi En who was now on its left, causing a strong gust of wind.
As soon as the bird missed him, Xi En acted before it managed to flee. The Sacred Sword that he had been holding went into action.
Swish!
A crisp sound cut through the air as the Sacred Sword swung in a glowing arc toward the bird at an alarming speed. It did not have time to react.
Slash!
A clean cutting sound was heard the next instant as blood sprayed all over.
The feral bird did not even cry out when its head was cut off. The human-face head flew toward the sky while its ginormous body fell to the ground, stirring up a cloud of dust and staining the earth a grotesque red.
Blood was all over Xi En who was nearby as he maintained the stance of beheading the bird, panting and shaking.
‘Skill acquired, “God of Military”. Do you want to pick it up?’
Another new message appeared in his mind, but this time, Xi En could not answer ‘yes’ immediately.
Feeling the warmth of the blood and smelling its coppery stench, Xi En bent down abruptly and puked, emptying his stomach.
He retched until he was blanched and weak. His pulse shot through the roof. Finally, he collapsed to the ground, unable to even hold his Sacred Sword as he was completely drained.
Xi En struggled to remove his clothes which were drenched in blood. He tossed them aside later. It was not until he was totally rid of the repulsive scent of blood that he felt better.
“This is inhumane!”
Xi En could not help but protest.
If he could, he wanted to ask the protagonists in the web novels, who had transmigrated to an alternate universe to slaughter the people and annihilate the demons, how they did it without a hitch. Take for example, the fresh warm blood which coated him and his stung nose, Xi En would not believe that anyone could endure it all without being affected for the first time.
“Maybe I’m not the lead.”
Xi En chuckled drily but dared not continue lying on the ground.
The presence of the feral bird indicated that the forest was not safe. Danger lurked at every corner and could pounce on him anytime.
In particular, when he used the Sacred Sword just now. Perhaps, it was due to the sword’s effect when the skill level was raised. Xi En felt that the range of “Perception of Enemy” was extended considerably which warned him of the presence of numerous creatures such as the feral bird.
Without the Sacred Sword in hand, his current “Perception of Enemy” range and its effect diminished. At present, he could barely feel the enemy’s presence within a radius of a hundred meters.
Just now, when the “Perception of Enemy” skill was elevated by the Sacred Sword, Xi En could sense a range of over a thousand meters in radius. He felt the presence of the feral bird and the monsters which were even more dangerous.
He concluded this was not a place to stick around.
“Best that I leave this forest asap!”
Xi En picked up the Sacred Sword as he got up from the ground. Once he had the weapon in his hand, the effect of the “Perception of Enemy” skill took hold, thus allowing him to sense the monsters within a thousand meters once more.
It confirmed Xi En’s thoughts. His skills were upgraded due to the sword.
Xi En found some changes to his status after checking them.
Firstly, his level had gone from Level 1 to Level 2. Apart from that, his Skill Point had gone from the initial 100 SP to 195 SP.
Xi En thought about it and picked up the newly acquired “God of Military” skill. His SP decreased by one point immediately.
“So, each skill I pick up will deplete 1 SP?”
Before he killed the bird, Xi En had acquired a total of five skills which used up 5 SP. His level up added another 100 SP to his total SP. Hence, he ended up with 195 SP. As he had just picked up a new skill, his SP stood at 194.
In addition, Xi En discovered that each skill he acquired could be leveled up as well as they were all currently at Level 1.
To be exact, other than “Heaven’s Grace” and “Supreme God’s Blessing” which he had since the beginning, his other skills could all be upgraded.
“The Sacred Sword has the effect of enhancing all the skill levels.”
With that in mind, Xi En upgraded the “Double Grip Sword” skill. The maximum level of this skill was Level 10. Hence, the display showed ‘Double Grip Sword (Level – Max)’ currently from its initial ‘Double Grip Sword (Level 1)’.
In other words, Level 10 was the maximum level of each skill. For each level up, 1 SP would be deducted.
If Xi En’s assumption was right, he would receive 100 SP each time he leveled up.
“Does it mean that I can acquire ten skills with each level up?”
Xi En was speechless. He figured it was not normal and shifted his gaze to another skill.
