Wild Crimson Rose: Beloved Handyman Princes Courtesan Wife - Chapter 430
“Your people are quite friendly with demonic beasts.” Rong Jian commented. His subordinates were still sticking near him, creating and invisible divide between the two groups with Yaodu members gathered on the left and Rong Jian’s subordinates gathered on the right. The couple was situated near the middle despite facing the door with their side.
“Yes they are. They should be quite used to dealing with them. What do yours think of demonic beasts?” Shen Tianyu tried to keep mum about the situation at headquarters as it concerned the security there.
‘A good leader must not put her subjects into danger merely for personal reasons. If it was just about myself, I don’t mind telling but things concerning Yaodu itself is a different matter entirely.’ She reasoned with herself as she changed the subject.
“I know there are many people in the general population that is biased against demonic beasts. I don’t think any of mine are stupid enough to put their lives in danger because of that bias, though. There are a few that feel strongly about them but they usually do not act rashly.” If Rong Jian noticed her purposely changing subjects, he didn’t show any indication of it.
“That makes sense. Humanity and demonic beasts have an ongoing enmity, after all. Some of the others also did not take kindly to them at first.” There were a few who were initially opposed to populating the forest with demonic beast.
There were already a few species residing there already but they rarely ever interacted with the humans so those that disliked demonic beasts were spared from thinking about them too much. However, it was a fact that Yaodu’s security half relied on these demonic beasts so those people either left or gave up their struggle.
Demonic beasts, as despised as they are by humans, are also technically a part of nature. As human cities and towns expanded and developed, they naturally encroached on these creatures territories. As they invented more powerful weapons to fight off demonic beasts, they began hunting weaker ones or their young due to fear. These creatures obviously would not sit back and let themselves be run over by humans. Those who had their territory intruded attacked settlements until they became ghost towns. Those who were being hunted, for human greed because some part of their body was useful, or because they were feared, started to ban together and create alliances with others.
Due to this back and forth, there were, of course, some races that despised humans no matter who it was. But also because of this interaction, there were demonic beasts who became curious about humans instead. The ones residing in Yaodu’s surrounding forest were mostly non-hostile to humans. There were a few who didn’t care what happened to humans in general but had a special spot for them after spending a long time with them. After all, some of these demonic beasts were saved by Shen Tianyu so they naturally showed her a degree of face after settling in. Some of them were chased by other demonic beasts while others were chased by humans. But they all found a home with her help. There was also a solid pact with the demonic beast species living in it and the members of Yaodu. Everyone was aware of the contract and its contents so no one dared to act rashly.
A major condition for selecting new recruits was that they must be calm and not hold strong biases against demonic beasts. They must not act rashly and must not be greedy for what did not belong to them. It is made clear from day one that they, the humans, were the intruders of this forest and that they were the ones being protected. They must not harm their protectors in any way lest it causes them to be abandoned. One of the reasons why Yaodu is so renowned despite the old farts being recluses was precisely because the forest was nigh impossible to enter or pass through unless you were a recognized member of the organization. Traps and illusions surrounded the place and even until today, after other groups starting making a move on them, no “outsider” has been able to enter the forest and reach their headquarters. If they gave up, they were lucky, if they were stubborn, even their bones may not be found.
However, the human mind is deep and profound. It’s not for sure that every recruit would be seen through so easily. Especially if they were just picked up from somewhere rather than someone that the members spent a significant amount of time with. Thinking of this, Shen Tianyu took it into consideration when the contract was written too. Those that betray the peace contract with the demonic beasts is betraying the organization. And those traitors… will be killed without discussion. As for the ones that took them in, they would serve a punishment equal to what their “underling” had caused.
This made the members doubly careful when recruiting newbies. This didn’t mean that these situations were avoided completely either. There was just a few of them over the years, twice to be exact. And thanks to Shen Tianyu recuperating there, she was able to catch these traitors early on, before much damage had acc.u.mulated. so their recruiters also didn’t get punished too heavily. Just a few hundred beatings after a public trial of sorts. There was the social punishment of other members not trusting their judgement and their other recruits being put under scrutiny by others but that wasn’t something Shen Tianyu could control though she did put measures in place to prevent bullying and discrimination.
Perhaps in the eyes of others, taking someone’s life merely because of a moment of rashness or greed was over the top but Shen Tianyu didn’t care about such righteous words. There was no such thing as convenient as an easily accessible “memory erasing” in this world, whether it be a technique or items. The things that could do such a thing usually did more than just that anyways and they took a lot of effort and rare materials to either make or use. She’d rather not waste money and resources on it. Giving them a concussion was also out of the question as it had the same fundamental probably as those “memory erasing” mechanics. What if they somehow regained their memory one day? No one actually knew the principle behind how those things worked, just that they did. What if it wasn’t “memory erasure” but “memory storage”?
