You Won’t Understand Me - Chapter 113
It was a special day for which Zeng had been waiting for the past month.
Wu Fanxing’s wedding.
Zeng had taken a leave and Yul had somehow managed so that they could travel to the venue together and attend the ceremony.
Zeng wore a grey suit and Yul went with his usual black one.
They shopped for a gift together. Zeng made sure that the quality was top-notch, even if it was going to cost him his monthly salary, for it was the one and only wedding of his one and only favourite intern of all the time. Not that he hated the ones that came after Fanxing but they were neither that competent or as ready to work hard as Fanxing did. It was sad to see that the legacy he left behind was not up to the par.
The wedding venue was near the bride’s town. It was an old church that had been used for authentic weddings. The Church was decorated with white flowers. The setup was simple yet beautiful.
“Welcome,” the hosts greeted. Zeng and Yul bowed to the elders who stood at the entrance to welcome them. They were the bride’s parents.
“Xiao Sir!” Zeng turned at the mention of his name to find Fanxing smiling ear to ear. “Welcome!”
“Fanxing,” Zeng could only whisper after seeing him. The young boy who came to work as his junior was now standing before him as a man in a tuxedo with a flower attached to his pocket. He still had his glasses, he still had the same bright smile, he was still the same old Fanxing.
Zeng felt proud and he wanted to cry. At one time Fanxing had been a child to him and here he was now, a groom to be wed.
“Look at you,” he said, hugging him briefly. “I am so happy for you. Congratulations!”
“Congratulations,” Yul said with a nod.
“Thank you!” Fanxing beamed, looking at the couple.
“Here is your wedding gift,” Zeng gave out the present, nudging Yul to give him a hand too. The police officer obliged, momentarily caught by surprise. Weren’t couples supposed to hand out gifts together like this?
Did Zeng tell Fanxing they were a couple? Then again Fanxing had been pretty close to Zeng and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he did so. Yul always thought Fanxing knew, somehow and he also knew he was fine with it.
“Thank you,” Fanxing received the gift. His parents were nearby. He hurried them to meet his senior. In the meantime, Yul decided to excuse himself.
“Mom-dad, this is Dr Xiao. Dr Xiao, these are my parents.” He introduced everyone.
Mr Wu caught Zeng’s hands, “Dr Xiao, we cannot thank you enough for what you have done for our Fanxing. It’s because of your guidance that he has reached so far.”
Zeng smiled and refused to take the entire credit, “Trust me, Mr Wu. I haven’t done anything. It was all his hard work and perseverance.”
“Thank you for looking after him,” Mrs Wu bowed.
“Please don’t,” Zeng was flustered. “If anything, I feel fortunate to be Fanxing’s supervisor. He was a great student and he would be a great doctor.”
When Fanxing’s parents left to attend to the other guests, the groom called his best man. This said man was an intern from the gynaecology department in the same hospital Fanxing and Zeng had worked at.
The boy had come over and greeted his senior from the surgery department.
“Dr Xiao! Sir, do you remember me? It’s Yifang.”
“Hey! How are you?” Zeng recognised another intern from the hospital. He was immediately busy talking and catching up.
Yul saw the interaction from behind. It was not the first time he saw someone thank Zeng for altering their life. Zeng had actually done a lot for other people beyond saving lives. One could even say he had lived most of his life helping others. Yul felt proud to have such a person as the love of his life.
It was also good to see that the people from his profession were so accepting. Nobody treated him differently because he came to a wedding with another man.
Only if his colleagues were the same.
But as Zeng had said, not everybody would be accepting. Whatever, he didn’t need anyone to accept him. He only wanted to do his job effectively. People judging his character merely based on his sexuality shouldn’t matter to him. Yet, it did, even just a little.
While his older boyfriend engrossed himself in chatting, Yul decided to stand back and observe the wedding. He was not going to take part in the conversations anyway. So this was the better option.
He had been to very few marriages in his life and almost all of them were of family.
Since he was a Buddhist, they conducted weddings differently. Yul remembered that his mother, before getting to know about Zeng, of course, had mentioned that whenever he was to get married, they would be going to his grandmother’s hometown in Japan and have the ceremony there.
His mother never mentioned it again after knowing that he was Zeng. Maybe it was still possible… maybe not.
He wished to find out. He wished to try.
“Yul?”
Yul was pulled out of his thoughts, “Hm?”
“We need to take the seats,” Zeng said, pulling him by the sleeve of his suit.
They sat at their designated seats. Fanxing took his place on the left, his best man on the side. The ceremony started. Soon, the bride came in.
Stella looked really pretty in her white wedding gown. She was a large person which she was insecure about at times. The wedding gown selection had especially been affected by this.
Fanxing had made sure to tell her that she would look stunning in anything she wore because she was the most beautiful girl in the world and she really looked like one in her wedding dress.
She looked confident, she looked comfortable and most importantly, she looked happy.
The beautiful bride walked down the aisle with her father by her side.
Fanxing looked so happy. Everybody did but the bride and the groom looked the happiest.
The wedding ceremony started. Vows were exchanged and the bride and groom were asked to seal the marriage with a kiss. Confetti was thrown as Fanxing and Stella kissed as husband and wife.
