Zenith’s Tower - Chapter 15
“Identify.”
Ellis whispered.
He focused on the monster to see if he would even be able to fight it or if he should turn back because he didn’t want to risk getting killed if the monster was too strong for him to fight.
[Gorethorn Lvl. 35]
This monster has got 9 levels on me. It looks weaker and less intelligent than the Imp King though, but I still don’t want to take this thing on, head to head. My best bet would be to observe it a little longer and see if there are any openings.
Ellis snuck around, watching the monster carefully for a while, creating a plan to take it out quickly and efficiently. He climbed to the top of a destroyed building to get a better view of the thing before he inspected the monster. He noticed that the only places not covered in long spikes were the monster’s belly, head, and the bottom of its tail. So, he was going to have to aim for one of those areas, but he wasn’t going to risk jumping down from this height and being pierced to death by the monster’s hundreds of spikes. Or use his lightning bolt and attract the attention of anyone nearby. He was still trying to keep a low profile. Ellis climbed down the building and positioned himself around the side of it while he waited for the monster to walk past.
I can strike its head and kill it in one clean move.
The monster stopped moving toward him and began moving away, heading out of the city toward where the silhouette of the tower loomed in the distance.
Shit, I won’t have a chance to sneak attack it if it goes out into the open.
Ellis thought quickly before he decided to pick up a large brick near him and throw it toward a window on the house across from him. The monster’s head perked up as it heard the loud crash and turned around as it started bounding toward the area in search of what made the sound. As the monster went past him, he jumped out, brandishing his halberd, and swung it down at the monster’s forehead with everything he had.
Ting!
The halberd bounced off the monster’s forehead like nothing happened sending Ellis tumbling through the air. Ellis twisted his body as he flew and landed on his feet in front of the monster.
Damnit. This guy’s head is hard!
Upon closer inspection of the monster, Ellis could see that plate-like scales were covering the monster’s head.
So much for one clean move.
ROAR!
The monster screamed in annoyance as it charged toward him. Ellis rolled to the side out of the way as the monster charged by right where he had been standing before and continued smashing through the destroyed building in front of it. Ellis attempted to attack it as it backed out from the rubble, but it flicked its tail wildly leaving no room for him to engage it. The Gorethorn turned around to face Ellis before it charged at him once more forcing him to jump to the side. Ellis preemptively started swinging his halberd down, aimed at the monster’s neck, expecting it to keep charging forward like it did the time before. The monster suddenly skidded to a stop as it whipped its long spiky tail over its head, blocking Ellis’s attack and sending him flying backward, breaking what was left of the wall of an abandoned house. Ellis’s hands stung from the impact of the attack and his grip on the halberd trembled as he crashed to the ground. His protective clothing helped with the fall, but not a lot.
My halberd is getting stopped way too much recently.
Ellis frowned as he got up from the rubble and dusted himself off. His protective clothing slowly started to regenerate. He had a couple of small lacerations and was a little bruised from the impact, but nothing too bad.
He charged toward the Gorethorn intending to bait the monster into an attack. It worked as the monster flicked its tail out toward him when he got close, but Ellis ducked down and slid past it, swinging his halberd at the monster’s side, leaving behind a deep cut. The Gorethorn roared as it lashed its tail out at Ellis once again. Ellis pulled the halberd up to defend himself against the attack. Since he had experienced it once before he better defended against the attack and braced himself as he slid backwards on his feet, clenching his teeth.
Even though he blocked the attack, his arms throbbed in pain because of how strong the attack was.
I’m going to need to take care of that tail.
The monster gave Ellis no time to rest as it charged at him once again. A plan developed in Ellis’s head as the monster charged toward him. He sidestepped the monster’s charge and swung his halberd down at the monster’s neck. The Gorethorn once again flicked its tail up intending to block the strike and send Ellis flying, but at the last second Ellis stopped his attack and dashed around the side of the monster toward its tail. The Gorethorn realized what was happening too late as Ellis brought his weapon down with a satisfying swoosh, cleaving right through the monster’s tail like butter.
WHAAARRRRR!
The Gorethorn screeched in pain with blood bursting out of its wound.
Ellis jumped back, satisfied with his halberd. It was the first time it actually did what he wanted it to do. The monster’s eyes burst with anger as it set its sights on Ellis again. Ellis stood still as he waited for the Gorethorn to make its next move. Ellis was alright with waiting for the monster to make the next move as it gave him more time to catch his breath.
With its main way of attacking and defending gone, it will be easier to cut this thing’s head off.
Ellis dashed to the side as the beast closed in on him. He was about to jump up from the ground and launch an attack when the Gorethorn slammed its giant claws into the ground, cracking and shaking the pavement, sending Ellis off balance. Ellis dropped his guard for less than a second and the monster took advantage of the opening sending its giant clawed paw directly at Ellis, who wasn’t able to pull his halberd up to defend against the attack quickly enough.

Ellis and the Gorethorn’s massive paw collided, shattering Ellis’s protective clothing’s force field and sending Ellis flying through the air. He tumbled through the air before a house stopped his flight. He crashed through multiple walls of the building before he finally hit the ground.
Gah!
Blood leaked from his mouth. This time Ellis was hurt. His left arm was broken, and his right eye had been caught by one of the monster’s claws, leaving him with only one working eye. Ellis’s body throbbed as he pushed himself up from the rubble, using his halberd to help boost him up. He crawled out of the building and the monster roared in anger as it noticed Ellis was still alive. The monster stormed forward once again, but a lot slower this time.
I guess this fight has worn him out just as much as me.
Ellis limped forward toward the monster holding his halberd in one hand and dove underneath the monster as it charged at him. Ignoring the pain from his injuries, Ellis passed under the monster and thrust his halberd up, into the monster’s stomach, gutting the beast. The monster plummeted to the ground at Ellis’s feet and slid into the ruined building in front of him, dead. It’s guts laid across the ground.
I win.
He noticed that his chest glowed indicating that he had leveled up.
Huh, I can level up outside of the Tower?
Ellis thought to himself before he dropped his halberd to the side and closed his good eye while he laid on the ground, breathing heavily to catch his breath. He was covered in the monster’s blood, as well as his own.
“Wow, what a spectacular show!”
A voice said clapping their hands together above Ellis’s head. His eye shot open and revealed a familiar face leaning over the top of Ellis looking down at him.
