Zombie Brother - Chapter 4 Declaration of Breakup from First Love
The zombie became increasing unsatisfied with the hair drier, for the air got hotter and smelled like plastics. She opened up her mouth, yelling at Bai Xiaofei. A fishy and disgusting smell came out from her body. And the green liquid were splashing all over Bai Xiaofei’s face.
However, Bai Xiaofei did not step away. It’s a good timing. He raised his hand and threw the hot hair drier which give out black smoke in the rear part into the mouth of the zombie. It was originally where the internal organs lied. The 220-V home electricity would turn the interior of the zombie into charcoals.
Meet your death.
However, the zombie suffered from none. The zombie closed her mouth and worked her chest up and down, as if chewing something. But obviously, the hair drier was not an appetizer. The meaty tentacle twisted and the eyeball looked at the dangling cords. She did not what she was digesting.
No, no way. Why did she experience no electric shock? Low voltage?
Bai Xiaofei saw the zombie open her mouth again, puking the cracked hair drier. Well, he would be the next.
Then his eyes became fixed. Darn it. The plug. Why did the plug come off from the socket? It must be because he unintentionally pulled off the plug while he was throwing the hair drier into her mouth with too much force. No power, no electric shock.
Bai Xiaofei would not think much now. He jumped to the socket, picked up the plug and inserted it into the socket. Bang. The bulb in the room put out after a flash. In the dark room, Bai Xiaofei could see it faintly that there came several electric arcs in the zombie, giving cracking sounds of electric shock. With the flickering electric sparks, the zombie was twitching painfully.
Now a burned smell unique to an electric shock drifted in.
Then the body of the zombie fell down before Bai Xifei, motionless.
Dead?
Dead for sure?
Bai Xiaofei reached out his hand tentatively and he held back quickly and pulled off the plug from the socket. Then he tried to put a finger on the body of the zombie. It was motionless.
Bai Xiaofei gave a long breath and stood on his feet. He tried to turn on the light, but failed. The electric shock was followed by a short circuit somewhere.
He reached out the lighter inside the pocket. A flickering flame sparkled in the room. He approached the zombie on the ground for multiples checks. The zombie became a charcoal from inside to outside. Even the interior guts became a cluster of mess. And the eyeball just blew off.
Bai Xiaofei was still worried. So he picked up the knife and reached for the inside of the zombie. He stabbed and cut, and did not stop until all was paste inside. “Fuck you. You can’t mutate anyway, can you?”
I am still alive.
It was at this moment that Bai Xiaofei felt numb to his body. He sat next to the zombie, trembling and lighting a cigarette for himself. He smoked it deeply, felt thoroughly the stimulation of Nicotine and puffed. He then filled the room with laughter. “It’s so good to stay alive.”
The world had changed.
Bai Xiaofei had an instinct that his dull and ordinary life of a plane designer was long gone.
Everything had changed since the monsters like the zombie appeared in the world. From now on, he would be confronted with killings and blood. The zombie would be the first monster slain by him, but never the last.
Bai Xiaofei knew not what the future had in store for him. But he would give it all to survive. Not only he himself, but also his lover.
Bai Xiaofei put out the cigarette and found the cell phone he threw to the corner when the zombie had become mutant again. The domestic Motora N8888 was solid enough. Although there were cracks on it, it could be in use anyhow.
Bai Xiaofei made a call, listened to the ringtone and gave a relief. Regardless of the changed world, the modern facilities were functioning normally. It looked like that things were going better than he expected. The city had not been paralyzed by the monsters.
The phone got through, “Hello, (coughing)” there came a soft and beautiful voice.
Bai Xiaofei clutched tighter to the phone, “Wei, it’s me, Xiaofei. You must have known that there have appeared monsters in my city. Listen, you lock the door tight. Do not drink the tap water and I’ll come to you very soon. Please rest be assured, for these monsters were not invincible. I just finished one zombie.”
“(Still coughing), Xiaofei, you…you don’t bother to come for me. I… I don’t think it fit for us to stick together any longer. (Coughing). Bai Xiaofei, I wanna break up with you.”
The phone got hanged up, with there being a busy tone.
What? Bai Xiaofei stared at the phone screen blankly. There appeared monsters in the city. He killed one. And then he just lost his first love.
What an incredible day.
The black room had only the mild light of the phone screen in it. It read the subscriber he dialed hang up the phone. And there followed light busy tones.
Bai Xiaofei sat down, with his head held by two kneels. He stared blankly at the phone which delivered the message of breakup. There was a drop reflecting the faint light of the screen, whether it be tear or sweat.
Then Bai Xiaofei suddenly stood up. He rubbed his face and his eyes regained the sharpness.
Something went wrong.
Something went so wrong.
Wei was in danger.
Bai Xiaofei firmly believed that Wei was not a girl from vanity fair. She could never fall in love with a golden bachelor and dumped him. If she were superficial as such, she would never have fallen love into a Three-Have-Nots, one who had no house, no car or a fixed job.
Well, an outlander like Bai Xiaofei was the most disrespected “lower-class” in H City which was crowded with philistines. When those noble natives squinted their eyes and uttered “Outlander”, that was a bad language.
The love between Wei and Bai Xiaofei was simple and pure. Even Wei’s parents did not impose a requirement on Bai Xiaofei that a house should be the prerequisite of the marriage. They treated him like their own son. And they often advised him taking good care of his body while making money.
That Wei, born into such a family, broke up with Bai Xiaofei hurriedly when the zombies were running wild, could have all but one explanation.
She was in extreme danger.
So she would leave no means untried to stop Bai Xiaofei from looking for her. Because she could not have her lover fall into danger.
What a well-wished girl.
I would go save her.
It was the one and only resolution of Bai Xiaofei.
He did not know what happened to Wei. Getting cornered by zombies, or worse, drinking the polluted water and experiencing the mutation? Were those coughs over the phone the signals of her thorough mutation?
At the thought that Wei might become the monster like the zombie he just killed, Bai Xiaofei clenched his fist. His blue veins now stood out.
I’ll come to your rescue, Wei.
Bai Xiaofei stood on his feet, activated the computer and went crazily searching for the information concerned with the pollution and mutation. The BBS, Reddit and Twitter. Each possible channel of information had been looked through. Although the relevant posts were being deleted by the online administrators, who must be suffering from the cramp in fingers, there were massive posts released to expose the truth. Even the official sites were forced to issue stereotyped soothing announcements due to the tremendous impact, which released some facts.
A large-scale reservoir in H City was polluted by unknown virus. Through one of the three tap water plants, the water was transmitted into tens of thousands of households. People or living organisms that drank the water would mutate immediately. The mutation could be rather different. The flesh and the organs would combine and produce unimaginable monsters. What’s more terrifying, the monster would swallow a living organism and integrate with its genes to produce further mutation, through which, it would gain new features and functions. The more living organisms it swallowed, the more complex the mutations became. When it got tougher, it got even more terrifying.
