Zombie Brother - Chapter 6 Unnatural Son
There came the rustles from the phone, followed by his mom’s voice, “Xiaofei, are you alright? For God’s sake, don’t lie to me. If you are caught up with the virus, go see a doctor. News goes that experts have been developing the vaccines. And the disease is preventable, controllable and curable.”
Bai Xiaofei put on a bitter smile, comforting his mother, “Mom, I did lie to you. For real. How come that I’d call you if I’m infected? I just fear that the mobile phone might be cut off so I made this phone call to say ‘I’m fine’. You and my dad can be rest assured at home. There’s nothing wrong with me. Just think about it. Even if H City has only a few hundreds of the infected, the army has been mobilized. It won’t be long before it ends. Mom, and dad, have more faith in the government and the authority. Trust not in rumors or disseminate them. I will certainly come to you safe and sound.”
While repeating the most hated stereotyped lies told by the government and placating the two panicked parents, Bai Xiaofei said to himself, “Mom and dad, such an unnatural son I am to have you two stay at home and worry about about me, while resigning myself to the distant city for a living. Now that I’m stuck in the city with monsters everywhere, I do feel it a murder to find a way out. Moreover, I must save Wei. Mom and dad, take care of yourselves and forgive me for not attending to you.
Bai Xiaofei hung up the phone after he soothed the parents. He then took apart the phone, pulled out the battery and threw it away.
From now on, the phone was useless. When and if he sneaked into the apartment building or the living hell, the ringtone would only serve to expose himself and attract more Zombie Brothers. He did not expect a 110-call would make a difference. What’s more, Wei would answer his phone no any longer. Instead of a phone, what he needed now was a knife, one that was sharp enough.
A small fruit knife represented few chances to leave the apartment building and even fewer for Bai Xiaofei to save Wei.
The problems was, in the rented room of Bai Xiaofei, there was not even a kitchen, let alone a kitchen knife.
A loser was pathetic in all sense. Even Chen Sheng and Wu Guang could grab a flagpole to stage an uprising; however, Bai Xiaofei did not have a broom.
Bai Xiaofei stared blankly for some time and finally made his decision- go to sleep.
Whether it be him or Wei to save, Bai Xiaofei needed most the rest right now.
He was not a superman or ironman, but a more than ordinary youth. To finish the zombie brother that originated from the female neighbor had already depleted his strength. Even now, Bai Xiaofei’s hands would tremble out of his control.
In this case, even he was offered a heavy machine gun, Bai could not pick it up. So sleep and rest would be his resort. As long as he regained his strength, he could do anything he had in mind, or rather cash in the promise of a man to his beloved.
Bai Xiaofei caught a glimpse of the door. He just killed a Zombie Brother, during which process, sounds could be heard from afar and damages had been done to part of the lighting system of the building, causing the short-circuiting. But, the creepy silence seized the building. There was not another Zombie Brother paying a visit, or a survivor crying for help. Anyway, he was safe in the room, for now.
Bai Xiaofei gritted his teeth and approached the window for the continuous gunshots. “Fuck that. Hit the sack. I shall die with my dick upward or survive with my dick used afterward.” The army was purging the Zombie Brothers. Every passing second would bring down a Zombie Brother in this city. By the time when he woke up from the sleep, the Zombie Brothers would have been diminished in their density, which would benefit him in terms of his actions.
Bai Xiaofei grabbed a quilt, lied down and quickly, fell asleep.
On the following early morning when birds were tweeting and flapping in the tree, Bai XIaofei stretched his body lazily, sat on the floor and saw the charred Zombie Brother by electric shock at his first sight.
Bai Xiaofei scratched his head. “Oh, shoot, this is not a dream.” Zombie Brothers, the unimaginable creatures did appear in the city and in his presence. ”
He stood on his feet and rubbed his eyes casually, roughly a washing of face. Although the government announced it that the water supply had been cut off, Bai Xiaofei would strictly refrain himself from drinking the tap water before he found Wei and escaped from H City, with a “better-believe-it-than-not” mindset.
The hunger-beset Bai Xiaofei searched the entire room, only to find the apple half-peeled last night. Fortunately, in the previous fight, the apple found its way to the corner and was covered by a used plastic bag. It was not stained with the green blood of the Zombie Brother that splashed over a half of the room.
Different resources confirmed the truth that the green blood was not infectious to humans. But it was still gross enough. It was not a kind of thing Bai Xiaofei would do to pretend the green blood was strawberry pulp and digest it without a vomit.
Bai Xiaofei blew a heavy blast of air onto the dust of the apple and chewed every bite of it, and even the peel and core. He was so absorbed that it looked like the last meal in his life, if an apple could count. Bai Xiaofei had to do so. Bread sustains one’s life. He needed every portion of calories. He could not slay the Zombie Brother with his empty stomach.
Bai Xiaofei felt a lot better when he finished the apple. But, he was still hungry.
Bai Xiaofei looked at the Zombie Brother lying on the floor. His female neighbor never cooked in the rented house ever. Still, one could not imagine a woman having no snacks. A woman could tighten their belt and refuse the regular meal. But it would be a murder to keep them away from the snacks.
Bai Xiaofei decided to go out of the room, but he would not want to go too far. So he went to the room of the Zombie Brother for a search, which could be a tentative exploration of ways out and dangers around, and a collection of food as well as a confirmation of the version that people would not mutate when they got bitten by a Zombie Brother.
This was of importance, sheer importance. If it was the virus that produced chain mutations like the biochemical ones, Bai Xiaofei would rather stay at home as that was not something human technology could combat.
There came a male cry before the Zombie Brother broke into Bai Xiaofei’s room, which gave rise to his assumption that her love was killed by the mutant Zombie Brother. And one look was all that it would take to see whether the virus of the Zombie Brother would produce chain mutations.
Bai Xiaofei held tightly the fruit knife in his hand. Thinking for a while, he tore a towel and wrapped the knife and hand. Then he leaned on the door, trying to identify any sound. There was nothing but silence in the corridor.
Bai Xiaofei moved away the bed, desk and chair that were used to block the door very gently. He grabbed the door handle, took a deep breath. And with a crunch, the door opened.
